Detroiters love sports and nostalgia. Today brings both.

The return of Steve Yzerman — it’s almost a fait accompli that he’s going to be announced as the Detroit Red Wings new general manager — has gotten Red Wing fans near and far excited in a way that I’ve not seen in years.

After all, Yzerman is still beloved by fans years later. When the old Joe Louis Arena had its last Red Wings game, the entire crowd erupted into a chant of “Come Home Stevie.”

It’s a glimmer of hope that the best days of the Detroit Red Wings are not behind us. A light at the end of what’s felt like a pretty dark tunnel lately. So I had to laugh when a friend sent me this picture. Because we’re all digging out our old jerseys. Dads, moms — anyone alive and into hockey during those times.

It’s not lost on many that the Red Wings are doing this announcement on Good Friday. It’s also the 19th of April and his number is 19. Of the sea of tweets…

The press conference comes just days after the Tampa Bay Lightning were eliminated from the playoffs, a good sign that this has been in the works for awhile. Yzerman was serving as senior advisor after stepping down from the General Manager job last year.

The press conference where all will be revealed will be today at 3 p.m. It’ll be shown on DetroitRedWings.com as well as their Twitter and Facebook pages.

We’re also going to break it all down on the Daily Detroit podcast after the presser. Be sure to follow free in Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever fine podcasts are found.
