Downtown Detroit has another entrant in the competitive restaurant market, and this one has been underway in one form or another for something like five years.
But the Broderick Grille is finally here and open today in the first floor of the Broderick Tower, a somewhat recently renovated historic skyscraper that’s now a combination of ground floor spaces, offices, and residential that overlooks Comerica Park. And it’s ready just in time for the Tigers home opener on April 8.
Yesterday, we had a chance to take a look inside at the 5,000 square foot space itself as they were getting ready. It’ll seat 150. One thing noticed yesterday is that there was no easily visible sign beyond a piece of paper in the window. For their sake, they should change that.
The inside is a big change from my childhood when I remember it as my one of my mom’s favorite places, Flaming Embers. But, if they get their offering mix right, it has a lot of potential to be successful with two stadiums and various cultural outlets being just a few blocks away, not to mention the office and residential tenants nearby. They certainly have the space with a bar, a coffee bar, and a second level mezzanine.
In the mornings they will be open at 8 a.m. as a full-service coffee shop and starting at 11 a.m. Broderick Grille will be doing lunch and then dinner service, with hours listed until 10 p.m. (but the bar may run later).
They have five signature burgers — and one of them is called the Flame, so personally that’ll be the one to try first. There also will be a Black and Bleu, Breakfast, Classic and a Southwestern burger. There also will be appetizers like salmon rangoons, flatbread, lamb lollies, mac and cheese croquette, and buttermilk marinated chicken fingers.
Below are a few shots we’ve included from their Facebook of examples of their food, as well as their bar.
