What to know and where to go in Metro Detroit

See 10 Years Of Changes In Metro Detroit's Racial Geography Right Before Your Eyes

We at Daily Detroit love telling stories with visuals. It’s said a picture can tell the story of a thousand words, and we think the maps above as an animation and below, as something you can play with for yourself, from the Center for Urban Research CUNY Graduate Research Center, tells many stories. You have probably seen the map of our racial divide in 2010 with all of the color dots, showing the outline of Detroit. But although a compelling visual, it’s static, and so only tells a limited...

Check Out 11 Postcards From Belle Isle's Past

One of the fun things about the Internet is finding things that give you a window that lets you see in on the past. One of those windows are postcards. These samples are from the Detroit Publishing Company and are, according to the New York Public Library, now public domain. Digitized just last year, there’s a plethora of great images from Detroit that we’re going to share in the coming weeks. Belle Isle is one of Detroit’s jewels. Whether it’s kayaking around it, enjoying the canals in it,...

That’s why this weeks list is a healthy balance between intro and extroversion, offering you the chance to dance until you can’t stand, or park your holiday stuffed buns in a movie seat and ignore life for two hours. Whatever it is you crave, we’ve got you covered, so here...

Detroit Zoo Sets Attendance Record

The Detroit Zoo is seeing a surge in popularity, and for the ninth year in a row attendance is more than one million. It “smashed” their modern-day attendance record in 2015 according to officials, attracting 1,476,378 visitors. The previous record, set in 1997, was 1,364,905.   A end of year contributor to the stunning total was Wild Lights, the Detroit Zoo’s annual holiday light display that drew more than 144,000 guests. Other highlights were the new Cotton Family Wolf Wilderness, whi...

GM Invests $500M In Lyft, Places Big Bet On A Driverless Future

As much as it might sound like crazy talk here in the Motor City, transportation tastes are shifting. Big companies see transportation as we know it changing. For various reasons, the number of people buying cars that are between the age of 18 and 34 has fallen by almost 30 percent, and only 54% of teens are getting their drivers licenses before turning 18. There has been a lot of activity around technology and cars as of late. Just a few weeks ago it was leaked that Ford and Google are crea...

Jack White To Release Live Tracks Recorded In Detroit From The 90s

Around the corner and down the way from the Cass Corridor-ish Daily Detroit blogquarters is a building with a unique facade. It has a triangular bit over the door, and if walls could talk, it would have decades of stories. I’m talking about a bar that is no more – it is one that probably few have ever heard of, but was important in the development of the Detroit music scene. The Gold Dollar. Let’s allow “Music USA: A Rough Guide” to lay out the description of the most modern incarnation, l...

The Staples Near Downtown Detroit Closed And Nobody Seems To Have Noticed

It looks like the Staples location just a bit east of downtown Detroit has met an unceremonious demise. In general, office supplies bought through retail stores is dying and transitioning to the web. The location at Jefferson and Joseph Campau is in a good place for a lot of things. It’s just down the street from a set of restaurants, there are plenty of residences in short distance, and it has parking out front. Pulling into the lot, you find not only the letters on the ground – but a...

Wayne County Judge Seeks To Trademark "The Detroit RiverWalk" And "Make Some Money For Myself"

This is a doozy that might be one of those “Only in Detroit” moments … and not in a good way. The Detroit RiverWalk is a popular destination. Millions of dollars have been poured into its transformation over recent years making a large impact with parks, public spaces, and development — but they happened to forget about a minor detail in their sweeping project that will eventually run from the bridge to Belle Isle to the Ambassador Bridge. The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, it turns out, ne...

NFL On FOX Rob Riggle Segment Takes Swipe At Detroit In Pregame Show, The Detroiternet Goes Nuts

The Detroit Lions may have won today, but that doesn’t stop the city of Detroit from taking a hit. There is a bit of outrage brewing on sites and the blogosphere about comedian Rob Riggle’s 2015 NFL wrap up featuring not Detroit’s football team, but a picture of a Detroit city limits sign juxtaposed with an abandoned building. Before the game where the Lions beat the Chicago Bears, Comedian Rob Riggle hosted a “Remembering 2015” segment to “pay our respects to what was lost in 2015.” Detroit...

Long Awaited La Rondinella To Open In Eastern Market On Tuesday

New restaurants are becoming a common occurrence in the greater Downtown Detroit area as of late. One of the more anticipated additions to the scene is La Rondinella, a concept by Dave Mancini, the genius behind the award-winning Supino Pizza (that happens to be next door). If you don’t know Supino already, here’s a little about them on Food Network. The announcement about La Rondinella came via the Supino Facebook page, and will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. This...

Two Of The Top 10 Cities For Singles In The U.S. Are In Michigan

The single life is fun, but there are still challenges. One of those is making sure not only there’s enough people to meet to improve your chances, but also fun things to do. The folks from FindTheHome.com wanted to identify where singles should be living for both the opportunity to find a partner and plenty of fun date activities. Here are the qualities they looked at, using Dunn & Bradstreet data on cities of 25,000+ as their benchmark. * Percentage of people who’ve never been married. *...

The Detroit Zoo Gets 20 Adorable New Inhabitants

The Detroit Zoo just scored a seriously adorable belated Christmas gift – 10 male and 10 female Gentoo Penguins. The addition of these plump little bundles of magic bring the Detroit Zoo’s total penguin population to 80. Don’t be fooled by their small stature, though. These 30 inch tall, 20 pound flightless birds can still make serious moves in the water, reaching a max swimming speed of 22 mph. They’ll soon settle into their spectacular new $29.5 million penguin playground, The Polk Pengu...

As of this writing, it has more than 23,000 views since it was posted a few days ago. Enjoy! Here's how he proposed to me! Posted by Cita Wiley on Saturday, December 26, 2015...

It's Lights Out For Bagger Dave's Downtown Detroit Location

Making it as a restaurant downtown isn’t a walk in the park. That has been proven time and time again, and locally-based smaller chains haven’t fared well as of late in the Central Business District (CBD), seeing both an Olga’s and now Bagger Dave’s downtown locations close. Eater Detroit first reported the closing, and it has been confirmed by multiple outlets, a press release and, well, you can see the above picture from this evening. It’s dark. Here’s a quote in corporatese from their pre...

Time Machine: "Getting About" In Detroit By Streetcar In 1935

Detroit didn’t always have a lackluster transit system. At one point, it was something that filled our city full of pride (and we hope, one day, it will again). While wandering around the Internet, we found this great three part series called “Getting About.” It’s a promotional video by the old Department of Street Railways. The scale of our infrastructure in Detroit was impressive. We used to make our own parts for our street cars, and had acres of yard to support them. 400 streetcars would...
