Detroit's viral kindness is contagious: $10k raised in a day to get car for biking man

Many of us had to deal with a lot of snow on Saturday, especially up by Oakland County. Sure, we may have had to shovel it, or brush it off your car – but imagine you had to bike to work in it. And imagine that your seven mile bike ride has been going on for five years to your job at Meijer. On top of that, the road you have to take is the insanely busy M-59. That’s the case with a man known only as “Tony,” according to a Facebook post and GoFundMe page by Jason Kapoor. Tony works at Meijer...

WATCH: NBC News looks inside Detroit's bicycle renaissance

From Slow Roll to The Hub to Detroit Bikes and much more, Detroit has a cycling renaissance going on. NBC News spent more than seven minutes on bicycling and the Motor City. As a bicycle commuter when the weather cooperates, there’s nothing better than Detroit by bike. Most of greater downtown and all the way to Southwest up to Boston Edison to Indian Village is pretty accessible by pedal power. Not to mention, bike commuting is on the rise in Detroit. At one point in the not too distant p...

Detroit gets record snowfall, receives more than a foot in some Detroit suburbs

One of the sayings in Michigan is “if you don’t like the weather, wait 10 minutes, and it’ll change.” In the last couple of days, temperatures were in the sixty degree range. It happened across the Detroit region, but if you’re in Oakland County, there’s a good chance you got really dumped on by the snowstorm that leftat least 40,000 homes serviced by DTE Energy without power. The snowfall on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service, shattered the previous Nov. 21 record of 1.4 inch...

Do you feel rich or poor? Here's a Wealthometer to find out where you really stand

One of the things about our recent economic times is that although the recession seems to be ending and there are more jobs than a few years ago, those jobs seem to be paying less. There has been a lot of talk about the 1% as well as a $15/hour minimum wage – especially in a town that was the crucible of the union movement, Detroit. But how wealthy are you, really? One of the many interesting quirks of human nature is that people consistently under- and overestimate their own place in wealth...

Stashed behind the new Third Man Records in Detroit, like an awesome find in at the back of a crate of 45s, will be a vinyl record pressing plant. The Detroit native musician will open the first vinyl record pressing plant in Detroit since Archer Record Pressing started up in 1965. The plant behind 441 West Canfield won’t be operational on Friday, but the plan is to eventually have eight presses going according to Pitchfork. Detroit native Jack White’s much anticipated store that’s opening next door to the Shinola store on Canfield has a few tricks up its sleeve. First, you need to know the date. Black Friday, Nov. 27. Detroit executives slept outside last night to raise awareness about homelessness and funds for Covenant House

At 6 a.m. on what felt like the first true winter morning of the year, I stood outside talking with Gerald J. Piro, Director of Covenant House Detroit. He’d just spent the night outside, in a cardboard box bed and a few layers of clothing, with the mission to help raise awareness about homelessness in Detroit and across the country. The Covenant House location at 2959 Martin Luther King Blvd. houses a total of 75 homeless youth. 45 live in the emergency facility, the remaining 30 in a long t...

On Thursday night a van slammed into the front of one of Detroit’s most beloved establishments, Marcus Hamburgers. Marcus is known for their rectangular hamburgers in hot dog buns. Marcus Hamburgers, featured by many places including our tasty burger list, was already closed for the evening when the incident occurred. It’s located on Six Mile between Mound and Van Dyke and has been around since 1929. The driver was taken to the hospital. There is no word on the extent of their injuries, or...

Debate over wolf population Great Lakes Region is still ongoing

For years, animal advocacy groups in the Great Lakes Region have fought to ensure the place of gray wolves on the US endangered species list. It looks like the fight will continue, though, as a recent letter signed by 26 wildlife scientists has requested that U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell and Dan Ashe, director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, make the decision to remove the animals from the list. The group of scientists state that while the wolf population nearly disappeared du...

A vote was held on Facebook in orde...

Girls Rock Detroit Inspires A New Generation of Artists

When you consider the deep and rich musical history of Detroit, it’s amazing to think what the next generation of Detroit musicians might contribute to the world. However, with school music and arts programs on the chopping block across the state many young people may never have the chance to pick up an instrument, or realize the value of harnessing the art form as a means of self-expression, or even a career path. One local organization is on a mission to make sure that young women in th...
