Michigan Has Best Uniforms In College Football, Says Poll

Sometimes, it’s all about the classics. In a recent ranking of the best college football uniforms in the country by USA, the University of Michigan comes out on top. The Wolverines have been wearing the winged helmet since 1938. The design had a very practical purpose. The distinctive helmet would also have practical advantages on the field. Crisler figured the helmet would help his halfbacks find receivers downfield. “There was a tendency to use different colored helmets just for receiver...

Detroit's Spirits Are On The Rise With New Homegrown Rye

Spirits in Detroit are on the rise. Distilled spirits, that is. You might not know that Detroit has a long history making liquor. At its peak, the distillation industry was once second only to the auto industry in Detroit, but faced its demise with the onset of Prohibition in 1917. For all the talk about craft beer in this state as of late, over the last several years Michigan has solidified its reputation as major player in the craft beer industry. In fact, Michigan now ranks sixth in brewe...

The David Stott And Book Tower Skyscrapers Have Lights Again

Two buildings downtown have had a heck of a time lately. The Book Tower, a beautiful tower that is one of the more unique buildings in the country, and has been shuttered for awhile. Also, the David Stott earlier this year had a pipe burst under Chinese ownership, completely flooding the lower level in winter. However, there were small signs of progress this week at the two structures, both recently purchased by Bedrock Real Estate. In a blog post on BLocal, they outline the arduous process...

BOOM: Down Comes The Power Plant In Marysville (Also In Slow Motion)

The old power plant in Marysville, built 93 years ago and shuttered in 2001, came down today and is now a pile of dust and debris. The “Mighty Marysville” was about 55 miles away from Detroit, and attracted spectators from near and far. There’s something about an implosion that’s fascinating. One of the first local media gigs of this intrepid writer was covering the downtown Hudson’s demolition in 1998. Seeing something that took so long to build, and was used for so long, come down so fast,...

WATCH: A People's History Of The Boblo Boat S.S. Columbia

“There’s nothing like a Boblo Boat,” says the video. There’s a movement afoot to bring the S.S. Columbia, one of the old Boblo Boats, to service. The final run was in 1991. The Columbia was launched in 1902. Sadly, this effort isn’t in Michigan, but as a service that would connect New York City to the Hudson Valley. From the S.S. Columbia website: The SS Columbia Project will reconnect New York City to the Hudson Valley, revitalizing waterfront cities and towns, while also creating a uniqu...

Ruppits Are The Hand-Crafted Puppets Made In Michigan Everyone's Looking To Get Their Hands In

A passion for puppetry has turned into so much more for Ruppits owner Rebecca Casavant. Born and raised in Harrison Township she began making puppets for her church a little over seven years ago. She started a puppet ministry and already knew how to sew very well – she has a degree in Costume Design from Wayne State University, after all – and it has since evolved into a small business. Quickly people began requesting character puppets of all kinds and likenesses, as gifts, for themselves –...

The Taste Budz Food Truck Will Make You Melt

One of the tastiest developments in Detroit during the last few years has been the increasing number of food trucks posting up at Campus Martius and events throughout the city. We’ve written about the subject before, but we recently came across a newer kid on the block who’s serving up some of the best grub on wheels around. Taste-Budz Inc. is the brain child of Chef Gabe, who’s concocted a menu featuring a fresh twist on some savory classics. The menu is simple. Three sandwiches – one pork,...

Could Dan Gilbert Be Looking To Buy The Lions?

One of the most enduring criticisms of the Detroit Lions is of their ownership. The Ford Family has owned Detroit’s football team for decades, and doesn’t have much in the way of titles or winning seasons to show for it, and fans are frustrated. Public comments today corroborate something we’ve heard rumors of but have been hesitant to talk about say that Gilbert wants to own the team. “It has been his lifelong dream to own the struggling franchise and turn it around,” Lesson said live on WW...
