10 Detroit Urban Farms Rooting Goodness Into The City

According to the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development, there are about 10 million acres of farmland in Michigan and the state is home to 52,194 farms. As Detroit’s landscape has changed with depopulation, urban agriculture has sprung up in lots and fields across the city. Besides simply growing food, these are places to learn, teach, and spend quality time. According to Keep Growing Detroit, there are 1,400 urban gardens and farms located in Detroit. Through those operation...

Attention West Village Residents: You may want to kick on the AC, because things are about to heat up. Summer 2016 will bring the grand opening of the West Village’s newest attraction, Gabriel Hall. The space was conceptualized by Dameon Gabriel, a fifth-generation musician whose family moved to Detroit in the 1940s, after participating in Detroit-based Mardi Gras events with his jazz band, The Gabriel Brass. Described as a “New Orleans-inspired venue,” the multi-faceted hall will feature li...

Detroit Hustles Harder: Hanging with the Locals

“In Detroit, everyone has more than one hustle,” says my trusty tour guide during my #MittenTrip to Detroit. By that, she means that seemingly everyone within the city limits of Detroit is multifaceted – a banker by day and a DJ by night, or a painter during the week and a waitress on the weekends. Just like anywhere else, bills have to be paid. In Detroit, however, HOW they get paid is sometimes a different story. Read more at Awesome Mitten....

WATCH: Fresh Out Of The Factory, Here's One Of Detroit's New Fire Engines

Equipment problems have plagued the Detroit Fire Department for a long time. Whether it’s malfunctioning hydrants in the streets or beat up gear from being one of the busiest fire departments in the country (mixed with a lack of funding), Detroit has needed some serious help in that area. Although this obviously doesn’t solve all the issues, here is some progress. We spotted this video from the Smeal Fire Apparatus Company in Snyder, Nebraska of one of an order of 10 Detroit pumpers which incl...

The Dish: Try Authentic Pho At Thuy Trang in Madison Heights

I have a friend who recently volunteered for a year in Vietnam. When he came back to Michigan, I asked if any Vietnamese restaurants in Madison Heights, Metro Detroit’s unofficial Chinatown, compared to the real deal. “Thuy Trang,” he said. “The pho there is the closest I’ve had since Hanoi. There is another one close by that’s more popular on Yelp. It’s good, but not as good.” Thuy Trang is family-owned and the restaurant is named after the daughter. Their recipe has been in the family...
