What to know and where to go in Metro Detroit

Go Comedy! Brings "ROBOCOP The Musical" To Life At The City Theatre

Robocop is one of the brands that people readily associate with Detroit, so why not lampoon it? In that vein, the Go Comedy! Improv Theater is presenting ROBOCOP! The Musical at the City Theatre from Thursday, February 19 through Sunday, March 1, 2015. What is ROBOCOP! The Musical? It is a live musical parody of RoboCop and an original production with book by Sean May (from Eastpointe) and music by May and Ryan Parmenter (from Plymouth). ROBOCOP! The Musical is a fun, hilarious, re-imagining...

Detroit Selected To Host World Youth Bowling Championship in 2018

Detroit will echo with the thunderous sounds of bowling balls smashing into pins in 2018 as the city plays host to the World Youth Championships. The kid-oriented tournament is the product of World Bowling, which is working with the Detroit Sports Commission (DSC) to make it a reality. “Bowling has a rich heritage in our state and region, and the decision made by World Bowling to bring this premier youth tournament to metro Detroit is a testament to that,” said Dave Beachnau, DSC executive dir...

OnStar Doubles Down On The Connected Car With New Services

As much as Detroiters are gearing up for the North American International Auto Show at Cobo in just a couple of weeks, Detroit-area companies are also making news at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. OnStar is no exception. You may have 4G LTE service for your cell phone, but how about service for your car? Rolling out to more than 30 models of GM’s new 2015 line will be new 4G LTE services. The most anticipated component of the 4G service bundle, AtYourService, offers drivers a...

WATCH: Witness Rays Of Hope In Detroit

This time lapse video is a visual feast and shows some of the best of Detroit. Originally produced after the North American International Auto Show (it is almost that time of year again), this video called “On The Road: Witnessing Rays Of Hope In Detroit” is starting to make the rounds again to a wider audience. It was done by OSK (Oliver Schrott Kommunication), and here are some words from Steve Smith (his in-depth blog post is worth a read)… For those living under a rock, Detroit has been...

City of Detroit Warming Centers Are Now Open To Help Those In Need

This week brings some of the lowest temperatures Detroit has seen this winter, which can be especially dangerous for the homeless population or those without heat. In order to create warming centers to help provide food and shelter to persons who are homeless and do not frequent existing homeless shelters available within the city limits, the City of Detroit has partnered with Cass Community Social Services, Operation Get Down, and Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries. Additional support will als...

Throwing Back A Final Shot At Casey's Pub

That’s a wrap for Casey’s Pub, a neighborhood establishment that’s been around for about three decades. Tonight, driving by and seeing the lights on, a stop had to be made. Was it to be saved? Were the Facebook reports of it’s closing wrong? Alas, no. Casey’s was supposed to be closed on New Year’s Eve, but apparently bartender Gabe Azzopardi was allowed to open it one more time for the Lions vs. Cowboys playoff game. “If I could do anything to change it, I would,” said the barman who is...

These Memes Capture The Frustration Of Detroit Lions Fans

The 24-20 loss of the Detroit Lions against the Dallas Cowboys was painful for a lot of reasons, and the internet has lit up with some pretty funny memes to vent their frustration. Check them out and add your own in the comments or on our Facebook page and we could add yours! Frustration of over how Ndamukong Suh was treated…  Those first few were from the IT in the D fan page…  Referees also are a theme… (Above from our fan page from Mark Whelan) The one above...

Going to Belle Isle? Starting Feb. 1 You’ll Need A Recreation Passport

Beginning February 1, 2015, all vehicles must have a Recreation Passport to enter Belle Isle. Over the past year, the Recreation Passport has gradually been phased in at Belle Isle; vehicles were allowed into the park without a Recreation Passport until the vehicle owner’s next registration renewal date. However on February 1, visitors entering Belle Isle without a vehicle Recreation Passport will be required to purchase a window sticker. The cost for the passport is $16 for buses, $11 for Mic...

The Spirit Of Detroit Wears A Giant Lions Jersey For The First Time

There have been a multitude of jerseys on the Spirit of Detroit. Red Wings. Tigers. Pistons. Even one for a community action group (ARISE! Detroit). But never a Detroit Lions jersey. Until today. A steady stream of Lions fans have been coming by the Spirit of Detroit statue outside of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Building all day, taking selfies and family photos. It seems that there’s a ton of interest in the Detroit Lions jersey. Check out photos of the Spirit of Detroit getting outfit...

WATCH: Inside The Gates Of The Stunning Abandoned Belle Isle Zoo

We don’t share this video to celebrate in Detroit ruin; we do it to raise awareness because this place could and reasonably should come back to life in some way. The Belle Isle Zoo was something many city-dwellers loved when it was open. It never was as big as the counterpart in Royal Oak, but to many in the city, it was the zoo they could actually get to. The zoo was opened in 1895 and it has sat closed since 2002. Now, the State of Michigan controls Belle Isle under a 30 year leas...

Let's Kayak Around Belle Isle (With Photos)

Is “Detroit, Land Of The Great Outdoors” a slogan that rings true in your heart? If it doesn’t, it should. It’s more than possible to be active and enjoy being outside in the city. I have biked around the city, zipped down the Dequindre Cut on a Segway, and enjoyed a sunset cruise around the the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair. I’ve taken walks around Belle Isle and been rollerblading (that’s right) on the Riverwalk. But I must admit, kayaking around Belle Isle was a new one for me. It was...

The Michigan Citizen Shuts Down The Presses

For years, it’s been the Michigan Citizen and the Michigan Chronicle who have been voices from Detroit’s black community. The Citizen has had a progressive profile and a story selection that is sometimes different than the mainstream media … a perspective that was birthed from the eyes of a community organizer, and billed themselves as “America’s Most Progressive Community Newspaper.” But no more for the print edition of the Citizen, as they have ceased weekly publication with their last editi...

City Girls Soap (And Their Goats) Find Success And A Home In Pontiac

Drive down Orchard Lake Road toward Pontiac. Watch the strip malls recede into clean and refreshing nature. Park by the Goldner Walsh greenhouse and walk to the stone amphitheater. Beyond the amphitheater is a barn housing goats belonging to City Girls Soap, a family farm and small business owned by Amy and John McIntire, which uses goats’ milk to create high quality skincare products that are sold locally. Three exasperatingly curious and adorably affectionate Oberhasli goats graze on land ow...

Metro Detroit To Be A Top Destination For Families In 2015, Says ABC Travel Guides

The Detroit Metro Convention And Visitors Bureau over on Fort Street must be smiling about this one. It might not be conventional wisdom, but Metro Detroit made yet another list for travel in 2015. This time, it’s from ABC Travel Guides, who creates alphabet, activity and souvenir guides for kids. Detroit’s number three on the list, joining Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Orlando, San Diego, Washington D.C. and Times Square in New York. Here’s what they had to say about us. Our country owes much than...

Honest John's Sold To Owner Of Wright & Company, Plan To "Keep It Honest John's"

The legendary Detroit establishment, Honest John’s, has been sold for an undisclosed price according to a report by Crain’s Detroit Business. This is the third act for a place that started out near the Detroit River by the Belle Isle Bridge and moved to Midtown in 2002. Word is owner John Thompson is looking to retire and so he sold to Dave Kwiatkowski, who has ownership stakes in Sugar House, Wright and Company and a new coffeeshop to open in Midtown. For us, this was the quote that summed...

Detroit One Of The "Most Inspiring Cities" In The World Says GOOD City Index

What makes a city a great place to live? For many of us here in Detroit, the answer lies in the intangibles. The folks at GOOD magazine seem to think so, too. For the second year in a row GOOD has published their GOOD City Index, which measures cities based not on what exists, but on what could be. They call it “GOOD’s annual breakdown of the most inspiring cities in the world.” Detroit is number 17 on this list, with New Orleans as the only other American city to be ranked higher (at number 7...

WATCH: Spend A Relaxing Minute With Belle Isle's Scott Fountain

While at the Grand Prix over the summer, I took some footage of the working Belle Isle Fountain. Dashing around a few barricades that probably weren’t supposed to be crossed, I couldn’t help but get some quick video of the beautiful, historic fountain. The footage languished on a hard drive for a few months and figured why not share. Enjoy! If you’d like to know more about the interesting creation story behind this Detroit landmark, check this out. -Ed....

Would Bulletproof Baseball Caps Be Better On Cops Than Helmets? Local Company Thinks So

You see a police officer coming down the street. How would your impression of him or her change if he were approaching you with a military-style helmet … or instead, a baseball cap? Tom Nardone (more commonly known as the head of the Detroit Mower Gang featured on Anthony Bourdain and many other outlets) has a couple of day jobs, and one of them is BulletSafe, making bulletproof vests. Their newest product is a bulletproof baseball cap and they hope to create a product that offers protection a...
