Detroit Survived Prohibition, Detroit Can Survive Today

Mickey Lyons has been crawling through all of the hidden Detroit speakeasies that survived Prohibition as a bartender and as a writer. Every Tuesday I travel to Nancy Whiskey’s to hunker down with the Daily Detroit team to write stories, eat, and drink… whiskey. I’ve known that I wanted to write this story for a while, but when Mickey emailed me last Tuesday to let me know she would be bartending at Nancy Whiskey’s the same day and time that I would be there, I knew there must be something t...

OPINION: If Detroit Cabbies Want Respect, They Should Respect Their Riders

With the recent report of Detroit cab drivers protesting about the coming of Uber and Lyft, both ride sharing services that use an app to connect passengers to rides, we felt it was important to chime in. The cab drivers are talking about a 60 percent to 70 percent drop in their traffic downtown, and it is in significant part a problem of their own making. Anyone who follows Daily Detroit knows that we like to have a good time. Lists of happy hours, the best places to have a drink, and restaur...
