You almost never know where they’re going to show up, but when they do, it’s a ton of fun. During the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Corktown the Detroit Party Marching Band showed up for some guerilla brass hijinx. This snippet is from outside of Sugar House (on the same block as Slow’s and LJ’s). The band was formed in late 2009 by Rachel Harkai and John and Molly Notarianni, who felt inspired by the second-line bands they saw in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. They’ve been delighting the stre...

Behold Gilbert's Current Vision For The Old Hudson's Site

The site of the former Hudson’s flagship store is beloved in the minds of many Detroiters, near and far. Recently, the Free Press sussed out some in-progress designs for the space on Woodward, but today, Rock Ventures released a rendering of a very modern vision for the iconic site from New York architecture firm SHoP with collaboration Detroit-based Hamilton Anderson Associates. Their statement is as follows: “We did not expect that an extensive report of an earlier design concept of the Hu...

Pewabic Invites Detroiters to Celebrate Their 112th Birthday

If Pewabic was a person, Al Roker would be celebrating their 112th birthday on the Today show. There won’t be Al Roker, but there will be good times on Saturday, March 14. Pewabic, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making ceramics accessible and relevant (as well as makes some amazing artwork), is hosting a birthday party to celebrate its 112th year and to welcome new Executive Director Steve McBride. These Kids Are Getting A Safe Ride Today, But That's In Danger Of Ending March 31

Detroit being Detroit, there are almost always challenges. However, the Youth Transit Alliance is one of the ones trying to break the cycle of despair in the D for our children. If you don’t know the YTA, this program is important in that it connects children in the city to after school programs. You’ve heard us go on and on about how there are some huge gaps. 39% of households don’t have internet. A very high percentage don’t have cars. Well, here’s a chance to do something, if even in a smal...

The National Media Is Starting To Focus On Our Sorry Transit System, And We Deserve It

It’s going to be interesting the next few months. Ever since the James Robertson “Walking Man” story broke – the national media is finding various stories of Detroiters who have epic commutes to get to work. The story above is from the Associated Press, and highlights restaurant hostess Alison Norris who has a two-hour commute each way from Detroit to Troy for a job that pays $8.20 an hour. Not to mention, we come to find out that James Robertson, The Walking Man, walked himself out of the c...

It's So Cold In The D: February Coldest Since 1875

Over the last week, we’ve been measuring the number of Tweets that mention the phrase “It’s So Cold In The D” aligned with the high and low temperatures for that day. When out of town friends call, they seem to always ask if “it’s so cold in the D,” in reference to a viral video uploaded a few years ago by T-Baby that has had more than 8 million plays. And if you read Daily Detroit, you know we like to dive into data at times. This one we threw to our Irrelevant and Useless Data Division, head...

WATCH: The Metro Detroit Of 64 Years Ago In Three And A Half Minutes

In the 1950s, Detroit was a different place. The city started the decade with more than 1.8 million people. Our “Arsenal of Democracy” had just won World War II. This video making the rounds by YouTuber bconngemini shows glimpses of that city years ago. That said, there are plenty of scenes you could recognize today. The building now known as the Qube with the David Stott in the background, the Yamasaki ponds at Wayne State University, the Belle Isle Conservatory and others. Do you have any...

These 7 Places Where The Data Says Detroit Is Gentrifying May Surprise You

One of the hottest discussion topics around Detroit right now is the one about gentrification. There is no question that the city is changing, but it’s worth taking a look at the numbers to see what’s really going on. This is how Governing.com, which takes an exhaustive look into gentrification in America, defines the term “gentrification”: These lower-income Census tracts experienced significant growth in both home values and educational attainment. To be eligible to gentrify, a tract’s med...
