WATCH: The Tight Moves Of Detroit's Talented Soul Skaters

The Detroit Soul Skate is an annual event over the Memorial Day weekend. That’s right. Skate. Not skateboarders. Not in-line skates. Four wheels. Grown men and women on roller skates. The tricks they can do are pretty cool and it’s a peek into a part of Detroit culture you’re not going to see much in the mainstream media. Venues such as Northland Roller Rink, the Magic Stick, Great Skate, and Bert’s Marketplace provided the backdrop. Performers included some decently well known names like Dwel...

FIRST LOOK: Addison Eatery On Woodward

We have three words for you. Red Velvet Waffles. That’s not the end-all be-all of the concept that Maurice Wiggins and partners have come up with at the Addison Eatery, but it is a strong start. Addison Eatery began their soft opening this weekend, serving breakfast and lunch to a variety of patrons who braved an under-construction Woodward Avenue to get there. Here are four reasons to think there’s real potential in this space, but let’s be clear that this isn’t a full review as it is...

Your Detroit Reading List for October 26, 2014

Let’s go straight to some of the best stories around the web about Detroit! The David Whitney Building looks awesome. Although the rent is going to be above what we could afford, a $2 per square foot rental rate is the “tipping point” many talked about for downtown. The lobby is outstanding and the development will have a hotel, restaurants, and living spaces. [Detroit News] An update on inclusion in Detroit’s turnaround. Alex B. Hill’s data is still making waves in the media where there’s a...

PODCAST: Motor City Drone Co, RhinoCoders and Zabka Day on IT in the D Ep. 63

We’ve been looking forward to this episode for a while now. We were joined in-studio by Mike from Motor City Drone Co. Yes, a company right here in the area that makes drones, one of our favorite topics. Also joining us were Matt and Jon from RhinoCoders, a great program focused on getting children more involved and engaged with technology in the best way possible – by diving in and getting hands-on with it. Just like always, our first segment was all about some of the news and events that...

Buy Historic Trolley Cars And Much More At Detroit's Bankruptcy Auction

Detroit’s on the path to emerge from bankruptcy, so it’s expected there would be an auction to liquidate some assets to pay down debt. But this auction has such an epic list that it could be part of a reality show. Top of the list that caught our attention was “79 Transit Buses and Historic Trolley Cars.” What? Coasting over to the Detroit Government Facebook page, there’s a picture of a couple trolleys. We put it above. Now, these aren’t the ones Detroit shipped off to Mexico when they ripp...

"Cody High: A Life Remodeled Project" Premieres Sunday (With Trailer)

“You get the vibe that the dots are starting to connect.” – Chuck Gaidica Cody High School, founded in 1955, and the surrounding neighborhood of Cody Rouge is in an area of Detroit that has seen better days. But a group called “Life Remodeled” wants to change that, one school at a time, and you can be at the premiere of their documentary this Sunday. Doors open for the premiere of “Cody High: A Life Remodeled Project” at 4:00 pm Sunday (with the screening at 5:30) at the historic Redford The...

Your Detroit Reading List For the Week Of October 19

Hello, Daily Detroit readers! Detroit had a lot of interesting stories this week. There’s a little extra “thought” in the “thought-provoking” equation as even if you don’t agree with the points being made by various writers we found this week, it’s clear that the conversation about Detroit isn’t slowing down. So without much ado, here’s the list. Meet the Detroit graffiti gaffe. First, inspectors ticketed a bunch of buildings for tickets for ordinance violations.. many buildings whose owners...

12 Michigan Cities Including Detroit To Receive $75 Million To Battle Blight

A plan to combat blight in 12 Michigan cities was approved for $75 million in Federal funding by the U.S. Department of Treasury. The plan, created by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA), will help five cities in Wayne County including Detroit, Ecorse, Highland Park, River Rouge, Inkster and Hamtramck. Adrian, Ironwood, Jackson, Lansing, Muskegon Heights and Port Huron are also included. Detroit’s part of the funds will certainly help, however, according to the Blight Re...

You can learn from the best storytellers, historians and local Detroiters while exploring the city in a new way. There’s always more to learn about Detroit. Hamtramck Neighborhood Arts Festival Debuts With A Flourish

On Saturday, the Hamtramck Neighborhood Arts and Music Festival gave us a chance to check out what the artists, writers, and musicians in the city are up to. For an area of only 2.02 square miles, in which a total of 26 languages are spoken, Hamtramck might be the most culturally diverse place in Michigan. The whole of the city is surrounded by Detroit, and it has a level of urban density that makes it a truly walkable district.  It doesn’t come as surprising that the affordable living and mul...

Your Sunday Detroit Reading List For The Week Of Oct. 12

Detroit is a work in progress. And, as a major city, it always will be. See, we get this idea that other cities are “done” or “figured it out,” and the reality is maybe they’ve figured it out more than we have, but they haven’t figured it all out. Chicago is dealing with a crime wave. New York in areas has immense rent problems (for instance, we interviewed someone yesterday from New York whose rent was raised from $800 a month to $4000 a month overnight. How about them apples?) and now has mo...

WATCH: Ben Affleck Defends Detroit, "It's An Amazing City"

Ben Affleck on Real Time With Bill Maher: “There is a tremendous, can-do spirit that has been really, really inspiring to me.” Although the focus on most of the talk of the internet was about Affleck’s criticism of Maher’s “racist” thoughts on Islam, Detroit was part of the conversation too. Affleck also made the point that if the U.S. is going to talk about nation-building, we should make sure to take care of Detroit. We tried to make it so it loads right at the time the Detroit segment sta...

Survey Says: Detroit Is The Best Sports Town In America

If you live here for even a short length of time, the sea of Tigers jerseys and Red Wing uniforms becomes pretty apparent not just outside of the ballparks but in bars, at movie theaters, grocery stores and everywhere else across the region. We even wear our Detroit Lions gear with pride, even though they haven’t had a championship since 1957 and have never appeared in a Super Bowl. And the Pistons? We still have memories of their glory days. As USA Today puts it.. With its plethora of pro t...

What's Your Excuse? Hopcat Opening Delayed Until December And They Need A Better Alibi

Go ahead and file this under “we’re totally falling for a viral marketing campaign.” Mainly because we like beer. The new Hopcat location in Detroit has fallen behind on their construction, with their date open moving to December 13. So we’ll get beer from them just before Christmas. Now, delays aren’t unheard of in Detroit.. after all, there’s the gosh-knows-how-many-times the Packard Plant had a “visionary” idea, or the container condo project that’s been on the maybe list for a couple of ye...

DLECTRICITY To Delight Detroit This Weekend

There’s everything from a 4-mile long lighted bike parade to more than 35 artists lighting up immense buildings like the Detroit Public Library. What more could you ask for? Last year, about 75,000 people are said to have come to Midtown to enjoy a cavalcade of visual arts. It’s a time where Detroit feels like a super-dense major city, with throngs of people enjoying the displays and activities. The concept of DLECTRICITY is a “Nuit Blanche,” or a night time arts festival. It’s a free event...

50 New Buses Coming To Detroit To Bolster Aging Fleet (WITH VIDEO)

If you think Detroiters don’t use mass transit, you might be in for a surprise. Today we learned a staggering 40% of city households do not even own a car, and they’re currently being served by what even the mayor admits to be “the worst” of the Detroit services. The fact is that for the about last two decades, you haven’t been able to get around reliably by anything but a car around here, or if it has been reliable, it’s very limited service. If you didn’t know, Metro Detroit has two separate...
