Pedal Pubs Could Be Coming To Michigan Very Soon

You might have seen them on the internet, but not on the streets of Detroit – well, not legally, anyway. Under legislation approved by the Michigan House and Senate (with the House approving Thursday), drinking alcohol on certain pedal-powered vehicles is now going to be AOK if Governor Snyder signs off. Alcohol would be allowed to be served on commercial, open-air, pedal-powered vehicles, so long as the vehicle’s owner has liability insurance. Having open alcohol on the vehicles could still...

Michigan Could Become The Only State In The Nation Without A Film Office

Not only are film incentives that have brought movies to Michigan like Transformers, Batman, and Oz on the chopping block to go away for good, a Michigan Senate committee has recommended the entire film office be eliminated by 2017. The extreme move, if taken up by the full Michigan Senate, would make Michigan the only state in the country without a film office. In the name of road funding, Senate Republicans have zeroed-in on the Michigan Film Office which consists of six people and is a li...

Mike Rowe To Teach Michigan Students About Skilled Trades In New Video Series

Mike Rowe is known for getting dirty. The host of “Somebody’s Gotta Do It” (and formerly of “Dirty Jobs”) is getting behind the camera to engage middle and high school students and show them opportunities in the skilled trades in Michigan. If you wonder “why the skilled trades, and why Mike Rowe?” here’s a little background for you. The blunt-speaking TV host is also the founder of the mikeroweWorks foundation, which encourages skilled trades across the nation. Michigan currently has a gap of...

Current Road Funding Plan "Not Enough" Says Westland Mayor: Is It Time For A Regional Approach?

Roads are a contentious issue in Michigan. Although it looks like the Michigan Legislature is on its way to allocating some money for road maintenance and improvements ($400 million in this current budget) it’s nowhere near the $1.2 billion-plus experts say is going to be needed to truly take care of Michigan’s roads on an annual basis. Westland Mayor Bill Wild thinks that the various mayors of the Detroit region should have a seat at the table. According to the current the road funding formul...

Birmingham's Griffin Claw Brewery Breaks Ground For Expansion

Rejoice craft beer fans! Griffin Claw Brewery in Birmingham is expanding. The posh biergarten broke ground on a five month expansion for their 4600 sq. ft. Cellar House barrel-aging room, critical to their long-term plan of distributing at a second Michigan supermarket. They already distribute at Kroger. This is impressive growth considering they are not even two-years-old as a business. What is the key to their success? “Demand,” said Scott LePage. “In order to scale, you have to commit. We...

5 Awesome Photos Of Michigan From Space

Boy, do we love Michigan. Even if it means venturing north of 8 Mile (there’s a rumor one of our team members will spontaneously disintegrate upon crossing that famous border road going north, however, they haven’t turned into dust yet) and seeing all there is to see from picturesque lakes to waterfalls and much more. But there’s nothing quite like Michigan from space. It reminds us that our city and county borders are arbitrary and that we’re really all on the same blue and green orb rotating...

Yemen Cafe is a small place tucked into a low-rise building on South Jos. Campau in Hamtramck. Across the street is a mural of women in hijabs and burkas. Next to that is the New Dodge Lounge, a gritty but tasteful dive bar where drinkers young and old come to enjoy live music. Hamtramck is a two square mile “island city” (or enclave) surrounded by Detroit on three sides and also sharing a border with Highland Park (also an enclave). It is home to a vast array of cultures packed into a small a...
