Moms, ammirite? They’re the best.
With Mother’s Day coming up this Sunday, May 12, we’re offering a hand-picked, artisanal, fair-trade organic list of ideas for how to show your favorite mom that you love her.
Pies And Mead
Our first suggestion is a slightly unconventional one. Ackroyd’s Scottish Bakery, the Redford Township business responsible for those coney pasties we tasted recently, is teaming up with Schramm’s Mead for a series of three-course brunches featuring fare only available at the events. Fare like a cranberry ginger scone with clotted cream and marmalade, or a handmade breakfast pie filled with egg, cheddar, sausage, potatoes, onions and peppers. It coincides with the release of “Patty Fay,” Schramm’s cranberry ginger mead.
Seatings take place at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Schramm’s downtown Ferndale storefront. Tickets are $32, and you can make a reservation online.
Mimosa Bar
In Birmingham, the restaurant Hazel, Ravines and Downtown will celebrate its first Mother’s Day in business with a mimosa bar offering fresh-pressed juices like orange, grapefruit and pear, and house-made agua frescas including watermelon, pineapple, cantaloupe and cucumber. For brunch, there’s made-to-order omelets, a seafood station and raw bar , charcuterie, a carving station with prime rib and salmon, and house-made pastries.
Seatings will be at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. or 3 p.m. Make a reservation at hrd.kitchen.
Charitable Eats
Here’s a great opportunity to support a great cause with your brunch. Cass Community Social Services will hold a Mother’s Day brunch at Cass Community United Methodist Church, 3901 Cass Ave., with a menu prepared by restaurateur and chef Matt Prentice and Cass Catering. Expect a carving station, omelet bar, a garde manger station featuring smoke whitefish salad and smoked salmon, breakfast items and desserts including chocolat pots au creme and creme brulee.
Tickets are just $25 for adults and $10 for kids 12 and under. Call (313) 883-2277 ext. 203 to make a reservation.
Blackout Bingo With Mom
Wanna go a little more unconventional? Try Mother’s Day Blacklight Blackout Bingo at Deluxx Fluxx in Detroit. There’s no charge and doors open at 7 p.m.
The Gift Of Time Away
Lastly is the packaged foods brand Kraft. They’re offering a “Mother’s Day Away” promotion. But before you roll your eyes, this is actually kind of cool. They’re promising to cover babysitting of up to $100 to give mom the gift of a well-deserved break. More info in the link above.
One other thing real quick. Detroit’s Good Cakes and Bakes will be featured live on NBC’s Today Show on Thursday, May 8th. Owner April Anderson will appear during the 8 a.m. hour to prepare lemon velvet cake with her mom, Shirley.
