As far as cities with more than 5,000 people in Michigan, what are the safest ones?
The National Council for Home Safety and Security is a trade association comprised of home security professionals across the United States.
The report uses the most recent FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics along with the organization’s own population data and internal research, and came up with these ten entrants.
5. Hamburg Township
Hamburg Township, population 21,825 was named after the hometown of its founders: Hamburg, Germany. The Township’s safety rating is approximately 80% lower than the state average.
It reported 11 violent crimes (0.50 per 1,000 people vs. state average of 3 per 1,000 people). There were 85 reported incidents of property crime or 3.89 per 1,000 people, as opposed to state averages of 643 reported incidents, or 18 per 1,000 people.
4. Thetford Township
With a population of 6,740, Thetford Township received a rating of 137.98. That’s approximately 82% lower than the state average of 772.
It reported nine (9) violent crimes, giving it a violent crime rating of 1.34 per 1,000 people where the state average is 3 per 1,000 people. The reported number of property crimes came in at ten (10) or 1.48 per 1,000 people where the state average is 18 per 1,000 people.
3. Oakland Township
One of Michigan’s oldest townships, it’s one of the original 25 townships in the Michigan Territory. It has a population of 19,357.
Oakland Township’s crime rating is approximately 85% lower than the state average. It had six (6) violent crimes (0.31 per 1,000 people vs. the state average of 3 per 1,000) and 59 incidents of property crime (3.05 per 1,000 people vs. the state average of 18 per 1,000).
2. Grosse Ile Township
Its name is French for “Fat Island,” and is located in Wayne County. It’s 10,140 people actually live on islands in the Detroit River.
Grosse Ile Township’s rating is approximately 86% lower than the state average. It had one (1) violent crime (0.10 per 1,000 people) 34 incidents of property crime (3.35 per 1,000 people).
1. Adrian Township
With 6,352 people, Adrian Township’s rating is approximately 94% lower than the state average. It reported one (1) violent crime or 0.16 per 1,000 people compared to the state average of three (3) per 1,000 people. Their property crime rate was 1.26 per 1,000 people with eight (8) reported incidents while the state average came in at 18 per 1,000 people.
