There was a lot of buzz when the USS Detroit, a Freedom Class Littoral Combat Ship, stopped through on the way to service.
So you might be forgiven if there’s a little deja vu if you’re on the Detroit Riverfront and see this Navy vessel.
Turns out, one of the Detroit’s sister ships, the USS Wichita, is in Detroit for a few days. It arrived on Thursday morning and is expected to leave this weekend.
The Wichita is 387 feet long and 57 feet wide. It has a top speed of more than 45 knots. That’s almost 52 miles per hour. It even has room for two helicopters!
The USS Wichita is visiting Detroit as it makes its way to its homeport at Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville, Florida.
If you want to check it out, you should head down to the Port Authority. That’s between the RenCen and Hart Plaza on the Detroit Riverfront. There are barriers on the riverwalk so you can’t get too close. Tours will not be available, but if you want to see a similar ship you can check out our photo gallery of the USS Detroit.
My pro tip? There’s a great angle to see the ship on that curved ramp that winds from the Rencen and behind the Port Authority.
The Port Authority is at 130 East Atwater Street in Detroit.
