Warm weather is finally here, which means that families across Detroit will soon be heading towards their neighborhood park.
Detroit has over 300 parks. To make sure that the city parks are clean and well maintained, the Adopt-A-Park program will be back in full swing.
Last year businesses, churches, and nonprofits maintained 72 Detroit parks. This year, the City of Detroit General Services Department is maintaining 235. With the help from Adopt-A-Park partners, more than 300 city parks will be maintained this year.
“The difference Detroiters saw in the city’s parks last year would not have been possible without the hard work and commitment of these community partners,” Mayor Duggan said. “Thanks to them, 75 parks in neighborhoods across the city will be clean and available for our families.”
How Adopt-A-Park Works
Organizations that adopt parks agree to mow and weed their park every 10 to 14 days from May 1 until October 2. They agree to keep the park free of trash during that time.
The City of Detroit will install a sign at each park with the name of the organization that has adopted it. Volunteer organizations will receive priority scheduling for use of their park for events they want to host there.
Organizations can arrange for trash pickup at the par by calling the parks hotline number at (313) 224-5555.
Mayor Duggan said the key to the program’s success is accountability. The City’s General Services and Recreation departments will administer the program, conduct routine inspections, and work with partners to ensure that all parks are well-maintained. In addition, each adopting organization has to sign an agreement committing to the high level of maintenance at the park.
