Detroit executives slept outside last night to raise awareness about homelessness and funds for Covenant House

At 6 a.m. on what felt like the first true winter morning of the year, I stood outside talking with Gerald J. Piro, Director of Covenant House Detroit. He’d just spent the night outside, in a cardboard box bed and a few layers of clothing, with the mission to help raise awareness about homelessness in Detroit and across the country. The Covenant House location at 2959 Martin Luther King Blvd. houses a total of 75 homeless youth. 45 live in the emergency facility, the remaining 30 in a long t...

Debate over wolf population Great Lakes Region is still ongoing

For years, animal advocacy groups in the Great Lakes Region have fought to ensure the place of gray wolves on the US endangered species list. It looks like the fight will continue, though, as a recent letter signed by 26 wildlife scientists has requested that U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell and Dan Ashe, director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, make the decision to remove the animals from the list. The group of scientists state that while the wolf population nearly disappeared du...

This iconic Detroit building could soon be immortalized in Lego form

Metro Detroit Lego enthusiasts, rejoice! You may have heard the news that a Legoland Discovery Center will open at Great Lakes Crossing in the Spring of next year, but that’s just the tip of the plastic iceberg. Besides boasting 32,000-square-feet of indoor space filled to the gills with lego bricks and themed exhibits like a 4D cinema, two interactive rides, and several play areas, the store will also immortalize several Detroit landmarks in Lego glory. A vote was held on Facebook in orde...

Girls Rock Detroit Inspires A New Generation of Artists

When you consider the deep and rich musical history of Detroit, it’s amazing to think what the next generation of Detroit musicians might contribute to the world. However, with school music and arts programs on the chopping block across the state many young people may never have the chance to pick up an instrument, or realize the value of harnessing the art form as a means of self-expression, or even a career path. One local organization is on a mission to make sure that young women in th...

Here's A Hilarious "Remix" Of Eminem's "Lose Yourself" Feat. Mom's Spaghetti

It’s that awkward moment. You’re in the car jamming out to the radio to your favorite song that you think you know all the words to. Until you’re corrected by a know-it-all friend riding shotgun. No doubt for many Detroiters, you’ve run into this situation while listening to Eminem’s hit “Lose Yourself.” Well some YouTube genius has reinvented the song to help you feel better about yourself for only really knowing one line… “There’s vomit on his sweater already, mom’s spaghetti.” Enjoy...

Did You Know That Detroit Has Its Own Rare Gem?

Well, believe it or not, this is real. It’s called Fordite, or Detroit agate. The beautiful “rocks” are actually chunks of old, over sprayed automobile paint that were hardened over time by the large ovens formerly used to cure freshly painted cars. Although Fordite been referred to anthropogenic mineral because it is originated by human activity, minerals by definition are naturally occurring. Whatever your scientific definition, these are still really cool. We’re going to call it a g...

However, one company that appears to be on the path to sustained success is Floyd – a furniture company born out of the frustration of moving from place to place and constantly leaving behind cheaply-made furniture, only to have to restock new destinations with more of the same. Initially launched on the Kickstarter crowdfunding platform, the company ha...

Some not so good news for our fair city this morning, and a reminder that although there is progress in some areas there is also a lot of work that needs to be done. According to a recent ranking by lawstreemedia.com, for the third year in a row Detroit is number one among the most dangerous cities in the U.S. with a population of more than 200,000. Detroit’s the Motor City, but if fans of pedal power have their way and current trends keep it, we could soon be Bike City. In recent years, the City of Detroit has seen an influx of cyclists. Whether riding to and from work, crusing the Dequindre Cut, or enjoying special cycling events like the Slow Roll or Tour de Troit, approximately 250 bikes pass through the greater downtown area on a typical weekday afternoon, according to a study by the Hudson-Webber Foundation. Adding to the momentum...

Detroit Is About To Get Some Pure Michigan Love

The City of Detroit’s revival has seen plenty of press, but this spring, it secures another vote of confidence, this time from the state level. The much loved Pure Michigan campaigns that highlight the near infinite wonders of the glove, will give a nod to post-bankruptcy Detroit in an effort to shift perceptions of the city from being in transition to a proper tourist destination. A far cry from the typical pure Michigan ads, which focus on the state’s natural beauty, this campaign will sho...
