Weather is something we experience every day, but it also turns out that it can be pretty interesting art. Last week the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) announced the acquisition of a new video exhibit called “Detroit Weather: 365 Days,” which will premier on November 21, 2015, and run through April 24, 2016. The piece, created by artist Susan Goethel Campbell of Huntington Woods documents one year of weather in Detroit in a 90-minute video using footage captured with a webcam on the 22nd fl...

The nationwide rally is the combined effort of a group called, Fight for $15, who organized similar rallies in 270 cities across the country, marking the largest collective effort of demonstrations since their start three years ago. Detroit's Spirits Are On The Rise With New Homegrown Rye

Spirits in Detroit are on the rise. Distilled spirits, that is. You might not know that Detroit has a long history making liquor. At its peak, the distillation industry was once second only to the auto industry in Detroit, but faced its demise with the onset of Prohibition in 1917. For all the talk about craft beer in this state as of late, over the last several years Michigan has solidified its reputation as major player in the craft beer industry. In fact, Michigan now ranks sixth in brewe...

The Taste Budz Food Truck Will Make You Melt

One of the tastiest developments in Detroit during the last few years has been the increasing number of food trucks posting up at Campus Martius and events throughout the city. We’ve written about the subject before, but we recently came across a newer kid on the block who’s serving up some of the best grub on wheels around. Taste-Budz Inc. is the brain child of Chef Gabe, who’s concocted a menu featuring a fresh twist on some savory classics. The menu is simple. Three sandwiches – one pork,...

I Hopped In A Cryotherapy Chamber Today. Here's What It Was Like.

It was an unseasonably warm fall day today. And in the name of new experiences, I willingly hopped into what would become a minus 264 degree Fahrenheit chamber. It’s called Cryotherapy. Strange as it may sound, the practice has actually been around for some time. It began in Japan in the 1970s but has gained momentum in recent years due to its popularity with professional athletes, who utilize the treatment to speed up recovery time after an injury. I visited the newly opened Cryobalance the...

How Would Michigan Fare In A Zombie Apocalypse?

I saw The Walking Dead for the first time since season one this Sunday. Watching in horror as a beloved character (possibly) had his intestines ripped out and ingested by a horde of decrepit zombies, I got to thinking – “If this went down in Detroit, how would I, and the rest of the population, fare in a post virus, zombie ridden world?” Luckily I wasn’t the only one seeking an answer to this morbid yet inevitable question. CareerBuilder with the help of Economic Modeling Specialists Intl. (...

One of the most common and persistent narratives heard in Detroit’s revitalization efforts, is the focus on the Downtown Business District, Midtown, and the soon to be District area near Cass park, has turned a blind eye to the significant challenges of the surrounding neighborhoods. However, it seems that the powers that be are beginning to look beyond those borders and into the neighborhoods.
