Check Out Detroit By Going On One Of These 7 Jane's Walks

Every year thousands of people around the world take to streets to learn a bit more about a particular neighborhood. These events are known as Jane’s Walk in honor of Jane Jacobs who was an urbanist and writer. She believed that cities were complex and needed a good population density to succeed. Cities need to be walkable and have public spaces for people who lived there. She also believed that mixed use planning was important. If these words sound familiar, they should. If you have been pa...

Hello everyone! Is it just me or is this week is flying by? It’s been pretty busy since I got back from Grand Rapids on Monday, and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to slow down the rest of the week. The weekend is almost here, and I am really looking forward to it. I hear the weather is actually going to feel spring like, so that’s exciting. This weekend is also my 6th wedding anniversary. So we will be hitting the highway for a little road trip for a few days. We were originally going to head north, but after all that snow this weekend I’m going to take a hard pass. Who know’s where we will end up, but I’m up for an adventure. So anyway, let’s get back to this week’s City 5. There are...

Event Space, "Taco Tuesdays" Planned For Six Mile In Detroit: "The Wildemere" Event Space To Open In May

A lot of attention is paid to the Greater Downtown area of the city of Detroit, but here’s more development news out of the neighborhoods. There is a new development news on West McNichols (otherwise known as 6 Mile) and Wildemere Street on the border of the University District and Martin Park neighborhoods. I spoke with Corey Williams who is one of the owners of Strategic Business Development, the group who bought the building in 2016.   According to Williams, they began renovating the...

Hey there everyone. I hope you all survived Winter Storm Xanto (are we naming everything now? I guess so!) over the weekend. That ice storm was pretty bad, but at least we aren’t like Green Bay. Currently one in five Michigan children face hunger. Nearly 300,000 school aged children who live in southeast Michigan are at risk of not having enough food to eat. That number is staggering and honestly heartbreaking. Most of these school aged children are eligible for free or reduced meals during the week. However, once the weekend and summer vacation hits they often have very little to eat. On Thursday, April 19 the Gleaners Community Food Bank will be hosting the 25th Annual Women’s Pow...

Odds Are Bad For Horse Racing Fans As Hazel Park Raceway Officially Closes

After nearly 70 years of horse racing, the Hazel Park Raceway has closed its doors effective Thursday, April 5, 2018. There will be no more live horse races during the summer. No more watching simulcast horse races from around the country. No more old men handicapping every race in their Daily Racing Form while smoking a pack of cigarettes. When the news broke of the closure I was so sad. I spent so much time there when I was younger. My older sister was involved in the world of horse racing...

Your City 5: Fun Things To Do In Detroit For The Weekend Of April 6-8

I’m ready for spring to really show up — and for Detroit Tigers games to stop getting postponed. Let’s look forward to the weekend. The Populace Unveiling inside the Siren Hotel The Wurlitzer Building has been given a new life as the Siren Hotel. I remember walking past the formerly crumbling structure...

International Dark Sky Week Returns! Here's Where You Can Stargaze In Michigan

When was the last time you got a really good look at the night sky? Like, a really good look. Where you saw more than a handful of stars. I’m talking Milky Way realness. If you live in the city or suburbs I’m going to go out on a limb and say that it has been a while. Unless you took a little drive out to the middle of nowhere for some late night stargazing. Skyglow and light pollution have put a damper on our ability to see the stars and planets in the night sky. There is currently so m...
