When I think about the Scarab Club the first thing that I think about are the beams that are covered in signatures from artists that have made an impact in the world.
How could you not love seeing the signatures of Diego Rivera, Marshall Fredericks, and Norman Rockwell?
That is why this newest exhibition at the Scarab Club has my attention.
BEAMS will showcase the works of those artists who have had the honor of signing a beam in the second floor lounge of the Scarab Club.
“The beams of the Scarab Club’s second-floor lounge have become a living artifact, evolving over the years with the addition of each artist who adds their signature” said Ashley Hennen, The Scarab Club’s Executive Director. “Artists are invited to sign the beam as a means of honoring their significant and lasting contribution to the arts.”
The exhibition will have pieces by Gary Grimshaw, Michael Hall, John Hegarty, Lester Johnson, Balthazar Korab, Charles McGee, Nancy Mitchnick, Patricia Quinlan, Bill Rauhauser, Gilda Snowden, Robert Wilbert, and Glen Michaels.
Glen Michaels will be adding his name to the beam during the BEAMS opening reception on Friday, April 7.
Michaels is an architectural sculpture. You might have noticed his work at the Detroit People Movers Bricktown Station. He has also done sculptures at The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Building and the Goddard Space Center, in Greenbelt, Maryland.
The BEAMS exhibition opens on Wednesday, April 5 and will close on Saturday, May 20.
The opening reception will be held on Friday, April 7 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.
The featured image of the Scarab Club has a sculpture by Detroit artist Lois Teicher titled “Curved Form With Rectangle and Space”.
