Need that special gift made FROM Detroit?
Here’s a thought – a handcrafted, reclaimed wood charcuterie serving and sandwich board are created out of wood from Detroit homes. Each board is stamped with the address of the home where the wood was reclaimed.
Boards sell for $50 and are soaked in mineral oils for 24 hours after final sanding and allowed to air dry for an additional 24 hours. A final, all-natural wax seals and protects each 7½ x 15 x ¾ board. No two boards are alike.
Best of all, $10 of your purchase goes to Coalition On Temporary Shelter (COTS) to help feed a homeless family this holiday season.
It’s a unique partnership created by Sal Bono, founder of Branded by Detroit, as a way to give back to those less fortunate.
After losing his job in 2010, Bono spent months moving his wife and three kids between the homes of family and friends. When he lifted his family out of their slump and settled into a home in Detroit, he started a digital media content creation company, Canfield Studios.
After creating a wooden art transfer of the Michigan Central Train Station for his home and posting it to his Facebook page, Branded by Detroit was born. He received numerous requests to purchase the print and started creating similar items from reclaimed wood.
Branded Detroit’s products are up-cycled using materials reclaimed from deconstructed Detroit buildings and handmade with love in Detroit. They create handmade home goods, furnishings and wooden art transfers. Items are farmhouse style with an industrial urban flair.
As the business grew, Bono became committed to using it as a way “to give back to families in less than comfortable situations,” as he had experienced.
“COTS is grateful for this creative partnership with Branded by Detroit,” says Frankie M. Piccirilli, COTS chief development officer. “The thoughtful purchase of a unique gift like the charcuterie & sandwich board helps COTS feed a family for an entire day. COTS encourages our families to use meal time as family time. A little conversation can go a long way, just like the generosity shared by Branded by Detroit.”
COTS’ Emergency Shelter operates at capacity throughout the year, offering programs and providing services for more than 900 men, women and children daily. It is one of the largest providers of housing to homeless families in Detroit — sheltering more than 100 homeless children nightly.
