Cafe Con Leche is one of the early ones in this most recent round of Detroit development energy. They’re folks who put a stake in the ground in Detroit when few others would, and built something that the community loves. There have been many blog posts (including some for this very site), college papers, dissertations and poems written at the corner of Vernor and Scotten across from Clark Park, as well as countless conversations.
But as so often in cities, the only constant is change. According to a Facebook post from Cafe Con Leche, the Southwest Detroit location will close – and close quickly as in the end of the week, March 11 because they couldn’t come to an agreement with their landlord.

Fortunately, proprietor Jordi Carbonell will continue at Cafe Con Leche Nord. That is in New Center across from the Fisher Building at 2990 West Grand Boulevard in Detroit. That location has a more modern feel and is great – but there’s just something about the original, you know?
