Last week PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) released a list of the Top 10 Vegan Sweet Treats in the United States. Our very own Avalon International Breads has made the list.
Avalon made the list with their Vegan Cass Avenue Carrot Cake, which is filled with walnuts, raisins, carrots, and is topped with vegan cream cheese frosting and crushed walnuts. It seems hard to believe, but the cake is completely free of any animal byproducts.
“At Avalon International Breads, diners can indulge their sweet tooth while being sweet to animals,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “As PETA’s coast-to-coast list of decadent desserts proves, choosing vegan treats today is a piece of cake.”
I’m not vegan but the cake sounds really good. It’s too bad that I’m allergic to walnuts, otherwise I would give it a try. A few around the Daily Detroit HQ say that it’s on point. Not only can you get them at Avalon’s Ann Arbor, Midtown Detroit or east side Detroit locations, you can also pick slices up at the Whole Foods on Mack near Woodward.
Avalon is in the process of opening a store in downtown Detroit.
The remaining restaurants and bakeries can be found throughout the United States. You can find the entire list here.
This is not the first time that PETA has highlighted the vegan dining choices in Detroit. Last year PETA named Detroit Vegan Soul the best vegan soul restaurant in the United States. PETA has also called Detroit one of the best places for vegan dining.
