Children's Sensory Garden In Detroit Is Looking For Your Vote In National Competition

Detroit’s Michigan Urban Farming Initiative is in competition with three other cities for a $40,000 Urban Farming Grant from Scott’s Miracle Gro. The grant would a fund a Children’s Sensory Garden in Detroit’s New Center neighborhood.

The grant is part of a commitment to garden and green space development through GRO1000, a community outreach initiative that was launched in 2011. The aim of GRO1000 is the creation of 1,000 community gardens and green spaces by 2018.

You can vote once each day through Feb 9th. Here’s their pitch:

Faced with challenges of vacant land, blighted property, food insecurity and nutritional illiteracy, the Michigan Urban Farming Initiative uses agriculture as a platform to promote education, community and sustainability in Detroit’s North End neighborhood. Creation of the new Children’s Sensory Garden will provide a hands-on, outdoor classroom for local youth to experience nature firsthand using their five senses.

You can vote once every 24 hours and it is not required you give your email or connect a social media account. Detroit is as of this writing in the lead over Oakland, NYC and Orlando; Detroit is at 49%; Oakland at 43%; Orlando at 5% and New York is at 2%.
