Well, the Superbowl is here again and will certainly be a dominating force in the plan-making calculations of Metro Detroiters this weekend. Everybody loves friends, football, and snacks (or at least two out of the three). We are Americans after all. But gameday isn’t until Sunday, and the next weekend is a whole week away. So in order to maximize your fun this weekend, Daily Detroit has compiled a list of events that’ll keep you busy. Here’s your City 5 for this week…
Friday – Boombox at the Majestic
Boombox is a duo of producer/djs who create a funky, fresh, transporting blend music that is great to dance to. This group has appeared regularly on Mix CD’s since college, and their albums are also great. Check them out at the link below and go see them on at the Majestic in Midtown for some music that won’t let you down. Tickets are $17.
Friday – U of M vs. MSU Hockey at the Joe
Since 1990, Michigan and Michigan State have been facing off every year at the Joe Louis Arena. For fans of hockey, or any sports fans who are looking to to do something a little different, come check out this age old rivalry right in Downtown Detroit this Friday night. Tickets are $35 and up with discounts for families.
Saturday –The Jam Handy Fest
The Jam Handy Fest is from 5-11 p.m., and it’s a benefit for youth programs in Clark Park in Southwest Detroit, which includes Art, Music, Skateboarding and local Food and Drinks. It’s at the Jam Handy, which is a cool industrial space on East Grand Blvd, and should be a pretty good time.
Saturday – The Palmer Park Winter Fest
This is a fun family tradition in one of Detroit’s best winter wonderlands, the beautiful Palmer Park. Come out and take part in some winter sports, have a cup of hot chocolate while listening to some live music in the warm up tent, take a carriage ride, and don’t miss the dog parade.
Sunday – Full Heart Dance Detroit
Though many of us will be Superbowling on Sunday, I’m sure there are some people who won’t be. For you, I am going to suggest the Full Heart Dance Detroit, which is a therapeutic dance session led by Amber Cummings at the Russell Industrial Center. The point is to have fun, connect with your own body, and tap into your heart wisdom which all sounds good things for everybody to do.
