Okay, it’s cold out there. Weather-wise, this isn’t a Detroiters favorite time of year. The snow has pounded us in the past week and we’ve been skidding around the roads or sitting in traffic jams trying to find enough caffeine to stay awake and get things done. And on top of that we’re all a little stir crazy. BUT, there is a variety of things to do both indoors and outdoors this weekend that won’t cost you too much cheddar. Here’s our picks for this week’s City 5.
Friday the 6th – In the spirit of Valentine’s Day is a romantic comedy play called “Armchair Dating” at Planet Ant Theatre. This intimate theatre in Hamtramck has some seriously talented playwrights, actors, and creatives who work together to put out some very entertaining performances. We haven’t seen a sneak peek of this performance but we’ll bet on the folks at Planet Ant any day. Cost is $10.
All Weekend – There is a ton of stuff going on downtown at the Winter Blast this weekend. You’ll find the famous snow slide, a zip line, ice skating and snowshoeing, a hockey shot competition, an ice garden, and even a dog-sledding exhibition. There’s also indoor music and kids activities. So be the Michigander that you’ve always wanted to be and go down to the winter blast to have some cold-weather fun. This event is free.
All Weekend – During the winter blast, there’s another party going on downtown at the Checker Bar which is indoors, and right around the corner from the festivities. Winter Blast at the Checker Bar will be all weekend long featuring food specials, pop-up chefs, local entertainment, and shopping for local and michigan-made goods. This event is free.
Saturday the 7th – After the Winter Blast is the Bar Blast which is “snow-torious” pub crawl to about 10 bars in the greater downtown area. There will be continuous shuttle service between the bars from 9:30p – 2:30 pm. Obviously this one’s 21 and up only. Cost is $10.
Saturday the 7th – Celebrate black history month by patronizing black businesses at the African World Bazaar at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. Vendors will be displaying and selling a variety of products, including art, jewelry, handmade crafts, textiles, and organic goods. There will also be live performances, youth activities, arts and crafts demonstrations and more. This event is free.
