Sadly, it looks like the weekends of summer things to do are starting to come to an end. We’re only a couple away from hitting September in Detroit, but we’re not ready to give up on the summer fun yet. We’ve got everything from a world festival to a 14 hour dance party to an art walk and more. So get it!
34th Annual African World Festival – The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History
The African World Festival is a three day festival that is packed full with musical performances, poetry, crafts, dancing, and more. This is a great event to bring your whole family to, because there is something for everyone to do and it is free. If you want to go into the museum admission is only $5 per person, and they have later hours during the festivities.
The festival starts on Friday, August 19 and runs through Sunday, August 21. The hours for the festival is 11:00 AM until 11:00 PM all three days. The Write Museum is open until 7:00 PM for the weekend.
While you’re at the festival visit the Knight Detroit Book Fair it will be open from 11:00 AM-7:00 PM each day during the festival.
Detroit City Art Walk – Corktown
Sprinkled throughout Corktown over both Saturday and Sunday will be the Detroit City Art Walk, featuring work from a litany of artists in bars and restaurants.
Work will include items of glass and metal sculpturing, fashion, drawing, painting, watercolors, wood, poster art, mixed media, pottery and video installations.
The participating bars are McShane’s Sports Bar, PJ’s Lager House, Motor City Wine, LJ’s Sweetheart Bar, Ottava Via, Mercury Bar and the Gaelic League during normal business hours. So do a little DIY creative bar crawl in Corktown and enjoy the art.
Robots In The Park – Plymouth
The start of the school year is right around the corner. What better way to ease your kids back into STEM education than by playing with robots. Bring your kids to Kellogg Park in Plymouth on Sunday, August 21 between the hours of 10:00 AM- 6:00 PM for Robots In The Park.
Kids will be able to drive robots, all while learning about science, math, and engineering. There will be Lego tables, rockets, air cannons, and more. This looks like a really fun event for kids.
Kellogg Park is located at South Main Street and West Ann Arbor Trail in downtown Plymouth.
Live Art Detroit – Eastern Market
Live Art Detroit is not your average art show. Sure, there will be art for sale, but you can also make your own art at the booths. This is a really interactive art show.
The event is free to attend, but each individual artist will have their own price for their art or the art that you create at their booth. You can find out more information about the artists here.
Live Art Detroit will be held in Shed 3 at Detroit’s Eastern Market on Sunday, August 20. The show starts at 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM.

Greening of Detroit’s 6th Annual Live Love Local – Eastern Market
Eastern Market is always hopping, and this weekend is no exception.
Live Love Local is a great event that benefits The Greening of Detroit. It will be held in Shed 5 on Sunday, August 21.
Come out and check out 25 of Metro Detroit’s best chefs from restaurants like; Selden Standard, Roast, Dorsey, Calder Dairy, and more. There will also be plenty of beer, wine, and pop.
Tickets are $30 per person, which gives you food samples, and two drink tickets. Tickets for children aged 1 to 10 are $5. You can purchase tickets here. All proceeds go towards the Greening of Detroit.
Live Love Local begins at 12:00 PM and goes until 3:00 PM.

Woodward Dream Cruise – Pontiac to Ferndale
What is there to say about the Woodward Dream Cruise. You either love it, or you hate it. Either way it is a great opportunity for those who love cars to get together and show off them off. The cruise goes from Pontiac to Ferndale along Woodward and each city has their own events going on. You can find a list of all of them here.
The official cruise is on Saturday, August 20 but people start cruising the week leading up to the Dream Cruise. So if you can’t make it to the official cruise you can still see some pretty sweet cars on Friday.
If you’re not interested in the Cruise, and the idea of being stuck in cruise traffic makes you nervous I highly suggest finding an alternative route if you have to go anywhere near Woodward. Take this from someone who lives close by. It is a mad house – a fun one, if that’s your thing.
