Here it is. The weekend. Finally!
Although for some folks it’s been a short week (if you’re one of those few bank or government employees who actually take President’s Day off – outside of those folks, none of my friends had a holiday) it feels like forever.
I think inside it’s the longing for spring and all things warm. But, enough of the small talk. You’re here for events around the city of Detroit. And I’m here to serve them to you. With a bonus!
Love Me Tinder – Friday
So this is a fun way to see budding comedians for a kind price (just $11!) at the ever-fun Planet Ant. The theme of “Love Me Tinder” is that Love and Heartbreak have liked each other. This will be a sketch comedy show featuring their comedy students who have made it to their highest educational level. Of course, be sure to stop by Ghost Light Bar across the street, the Ant’s bar.

Black History Jazz In Homes In Palmer Park – Saturday
If you’re feeling like checking out a great Detroit neighborhood and enjoying some jazz & world music, this is the ticket for you. The Palmer Woods neighborhood, as I can attest to as I live nearby, is one of the best in the city. It’ll cost a bit of money, but the proceeds go to support creative work.
“This tribute to jazz giants features an ensemble of extraordinary musicians of multiple generations who will perform innovative and legendary works of jazz from bebop to avant garde and beyond, from the 20th century to the present: A. Spencer Barefield on guitar, Ian Finkelstein on piano, Marcus Elliot & Rafael Statin on saxophones, Jeff Pedraz on bass, and Sean Dobbins on drums.”

House Music At Eatori – Saturday
So if you’re into house music, and it’s kind of a niche thing (and I am), you’re always on the lookout for events. One of those is this Saturday at Eatori, from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. It’s a bar and a market, but the bar is the part that will be the star of the show on Saturday night. They pour a good cocktail there in Grand Circus Park, so might be fun to stop by. They promise summer vibe music… oh… dreams of Belle Isle and warm rays….
10 p.m. – 2 a.m. | 1215 Griswold in Detroit | Event link
Vegan Friendly Brunch At El Club – Saturday & Sunday
I swear, I didn’t mean to include two vegan friendly events this week (I try to balance everyone’s love of different things out) but that’s how the cookie with no dairy ingredients crumbled.
I kinda love the name of the proprietor, The Grim Feeder, and they have a selection of dishes that even me, who loves a good burger, would give a spin. My pick is the Cheesy Papas Brujas Tacos. Two slow-cooked potato tacos seasoned w/mexican spices & herbs topped with nacho cheese & smoky salsa.
12 a.m. – 4 p.m. | 4114 W. Vernor in Detroit | Menu and Event Link
Sisters On A Roll Kitchen Takeover – Sunday
Ok, you vegetarians and vegans. Here’s a special food event just for you. One of our favorite haunts, Nancy Whiskey, is hosting Sisters On A Roll from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. on Sunday night. Why not close out the weekend with a drink? Just be sure to pack up your fun wagon early enough to not drag when you hit Monday morning, OK?
5-9 p.m. | 2644 Harrison in Detroit | Event link

Soapmaking 101 – Sunday
OK, so this isn’t a party thing but man, it sounds fun. The Motor City Soap Company is hosting a class at Ponyride in Corktown. You’ll learn how to make handmade soap with simple ingredients and little equipment. During this class you’ll make a batch of soap and cover a bunch of techniques. You’ll also leave with a bar of soap and a resource guide.
