We’ve made it through another week. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been looking forward to this weekend. My calendar is filled with fun and interesting things to do all weekend.
You might notice that I have kept all of the Valentine’s Day themed events off this list. I’m working on a separate post for the upcoming holiday.
Let’s get down to business.
Café Con Leche at the Southwest Detroit Business Association — Detroit
If you miss going to the old location of Café Con Leche head down to the atrium at the Southwest Detroit Business Association on Friday night for a one night only event.
The event is part of the DIA’s exhibition Bitter|Sweet: Coffee, Tea & Chocolate.
You can find all of the additional information on my post from last week. The reception starts at 5:30 p.m.

Sphinx Competition — Detroit
This week is the 20th anniversary of the Sphinx Competition. Every year numerous young Black and Latino classical string musicians come to Detroit to compete.
The competition starts on Wednesday, February 8 and concludes on Sunday, February 12. There are two divisions for the competition. The Junior Division is for those who are 17 and under, the Senior Division is for those who are 18 to 30 years old.
On Friday, February 10 the Junior Division Honors Concert will be at 12 p.m. at Orchestra Hall. This concert is free to attend.
Sunday, February 12 is when the Senior Division Concert will be held. This concert starts at 2 p.m. at Orchestra Hall.
This concert will have the finalists play with the Sphinx Symphony Orchestra with guest conductor Thomas Wilkins. The University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club will also join in on the performance.

Detroit Polar Plunge — Detroit
If the idea of jumping into a cold body of water sounds like a good time you should check out the Detroit Polar Plunge. It will be held at Cheli’s Chili Bar downtown on Saturday, February 11.
The Detroit Polar Plunge is one of twenty-five other polar plunges happening throughout Michigan. The plunge is put on by the Law Enforcement Torch Run as a way to raise money for Special Olympics Michigan.
You can register in advance online or you can register the day of at 9:30 a.m. The plunge happens at 11:30 a.m.
Cheli’s Chili Bar is located at 47 E. Adams Avenue in Detroit.
Winter Season Opening at MOCAD — Detroit
This weekend is the opening of four exhibits at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. The museum will be holding an opening reception on Saturday, February 11.
The four exhibitions are The Architectural Imagination, Detroit Affinities: Adriana Martínez, Five Rings: Dana Hoey, and HOME: Detroit Society of Women Painters and Sculptors.
Before the opening reception there will be a curators talk from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.
The reception will be from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. after the reception there will be a live performance by Black Opera.
Admission for the reception is free before 9 p.m., after that time the admission is $12 and $7 for members.
On Sunday, February 12 there will be an artists talk with Adriana Martínez.
The talk starts at 1 p.m.
Admission is free, however there is a suggested donation of $5 per person.
The MOCAD is located at 4454 Woodward Avenue in Detroit.
Batch Brewing 2nd Birthday — Detroit
Look who is two already! It seems like yesterday that Batch Brewing won the Hatch Detroit competition.
Batch Brewing will be throwing a birthday party on Sunday, February 12 from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m.
Go check out the different beers that they have been saving for this special occasion. There will be 20 beers on tap to celebrate.

DIA Chinese New Year Celebration — Detroit
I just had to add this in as a bonus event. Head over to the DIA on Saturday or Saturday to ring in the year of the Rooster. Fun fact, I was born in the year of the Rooster.
There will be performances of a traditional dragon dance, artist demonstrations, displays, workshops and more.
