Welcome to the first week of 2017. For many of us we are back to work after a busy holiday season. I hope that you are able to adjust back to the regular daily grind.
Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds Double Feature — Detroit
It was pretty sad news when the world found out that Carrie Fisher passed away on December 27, 2016 after having a massive heart attack. Then her mom Debbie Reynolds passed away the very next day.
I don’t know about you but I felt like I had just been kicked while I was down multiple times that last week of 2016. Between George Michael, Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, and William Christopher it was a pretty bleak week in celebrity deaths.
To celebrate the life and films that both Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds were a part of the Redford Theatre will be showing a double feature. Get ready for an evening of The Unsinkable Molly Brown and When Harry Met Sally on Friday night.
There will also be a special tribute video that celebrates the mother and daughter’s lives.
Tickets for the double feature are $8 per person (which is a steal since you get to see two movies.) You can purchase tickets here.
The show starts at 8 p.m. The Redford Theatre is located at 17360 Lahser Road Detroit, Michigan 48219
American Dreaming: Corvette 7 Generations and Beyond — Detroit
The North American International Auto Show is right around the corner, so this is the perfect time to get geared up for it by heading over to the Scarab Club to look this exhibition of the Corvette.
The Corvette has been an iconic car for Chevrolet since it’s induction in 1953.
There are three parts to this exhibition. The first one gives you an opportunity to see the conceptual drawings of the Corvette. The second is a great way to see the Corvette of the future by checking out the work that design students from College for Creative Studies and Lawrence Tech. The final part is all of the advertising art for the Corvette. Some of my favorite advertising came from the mid century. It was just so … stylish.
The exhibition opens at 5 p.m. and will go until 8 p.m.
(Be sure to get there before 6:30 p.m. because they will be unveiling automotive designer Bill Porter’s signature on the ceiling beam.)
The event is free, and open to the public.
The Scarab Club is located at 217 Farnsworth Detroit, Michigan 48202

Both evenings start at 7 p.m.
The Magic Bag is located at 22920 Woodward Avenue Ferndale, Michigan 48220
Don’t forget to bring money for the parking meters. Free parking doesn’t start until 9 p.m. in Ferndale.
Free Downtown Walking Tour — Detroit
Now that the holiday hubbub has weaned there is more time to walk around and look at things.
The fine people over at 7.2 Tours are having a free downtown walking tour on Saturday, January 7. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes because you will be walking all over, and there is nothing worse than being on a tour when your feet hurt. (Also check the weather before hand.)
Head out to check out some of my favorite buildings downtown like the Penobscot Building and Guardian Building. You’ll also check out some of the great sculptures downtown like the Spirit of Detroit.
While the tour is free, 7.2 tours are appreciative of donations.
The tour starts at 1:15 p.m. on the dot, so get there a bit early so you don’t miss out on the fun.
The tour begins in the lobby of One Campus Martius (AKA the former Compuware building. I don’t know about you but I have a heck of a time remember the new names of buildings, but that’s a whole other story.)
Uptown Toast — Detroit
Uptown Toast is a pop up wine party that happens on the first Saturday of every month.
This wine party is a great way to check out all of the great businesses and restaurants that are located on Livernois in the Avenue of Fashion.
The wine pop-up will be held from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday, January 7.
For a $10 donation you will receive a wrist band that will allow you to come and go as you please throughout the four hour event.
The Livernois “Pop Up” Shop is located at 19410 Livernois Avenue Detroit, Michigan 48221
