Hello Detroit! We’ve officially crossed the September threshold, which means the dog days of summer are off the leash and running away from us at a blistering pace.
Fortunately, Labor Day weekend in Detroit is chocked full of festivals and other entertainment to ease us into the beginning of the end of what was another stellar Michigan summer.

Arts, Beats & Eats – Friday-Sunday – Royal Oak
The annual Arts, Beats & Eats festival kicks off this Friday in Royal Oak and is shaping up to be bigger and badder than ever.
Stuff your face with an eclectic array of food while enjoying top notch art and great national and local bands like Neon Trees, Kaleido, Young The Giant, and more.

Detroit Jazz Festival – Friday-Sunday – Detroit
If you’re looking for something a little off the arts, eats and beaten path, then head downtown for the 36th annual Detroit Jazz Festival. With a main stage located at Cadillac Square in the heart of Campus Martius Park, this free event is a wonderful way to enjoy one of Detroit’s oldest and most famous past times. Besides the top notch musical line up you can enjoy the array of great food, drinks, and activities slathered across the downtown area.

Hamtramck Labor Day Festival – Friday-Sunday – Hamtramck
If you’re in the mood to complete the festival trifecta this weekend, then be sure to save some time for the Hamtramck Labor Day Festival. This one often gets overshadowed by the aforementioned juggernauts, but let me assure you, it’s not to be missed.
Enjoy all the benefits of your standard festival but with a twist of Hamtramck’s rich Polish heritage. There will be amazing polish food, parade, live music, carnival, and much more.
Admission is free and this one is fun for the whole family! Or, if you’re out for a day with friends, you’ll also have access to the wicked Ham Town dive bar scene once the festival wraps up for the day.

DJ Tennis at TV Lounge – Saturday -Detroit
If you spent Saturday feasting on one of the many festivals, then finish strong by making an appearance at TV Lounge for DJ Tennis’s return to Detroit.
The Italian born DJ and Founder of famed Life and Death record label now splits his time between Berlin and Miami and has gained international recognition for his eclectic style and killer DJ sets. The show is presented by the fine folks at Paxahau, and will feature openers Ryan McCray and Loren.
It’s 21 and up, and doors are at 9 p.m. Ladies get in free, and guys get in for just 10 bucks, which is a small price to pay for a show of this caliber.
Yoga in the Big House – Saturday – Ann Arbor
If you’re not feeling the festival scene or just need a break, then cruise up to Ann Arbor on Saturday for Yoga at the Big House.
As a former Spartan, I wouldn’t normally advise visiting wolverine territory, but as a big fan of yoga, I’m making an exception. Whether you’ve mastered bakasana or it’s your first time stretching since high school gym class, this event is a great opportunity to get out and enjoy some activity in a one-of-a-kind setting.
