School’s back in session, which means that many young Detroiters will be walking through neighborhoods to reach their schools. While this is a great opportunity for students to get in some exercise and see their city from a new perspective, it can also pose dangers.
Jefferson East, Inc. (JEI), a non-profit community economic development group, plans to mitigate the dangers that come from unkempt, vacant properties. The organization has planned a Cleanup and Board Up project for four properties in Charlevoix Village neighborhood on Detroit’s east side.
“These abandoned properties have been identified as a clear and present danger to Charlevoix Village residents and to students who attend nearby schools. We were inspired to take action and help our neighbors,” said Joshua Elling, executive director of JEI.
The activities start today with a youth paint party from 3-6 p.m at Marcus Garvey Academy, 2301 Van Dyke, Detroit. Students and their families are encouraged to attend and help decorate the plywood boards that will be used on the houses. Attendees should wear work clothes and proper footwear. Youth under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
On Saturday, September 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. is the Cleanup and Board Up part of the project. Volunteers should meet at the Dr. Sophie Womack Health Center, 7900 Kercheval, Detroit. Those driving should enter the parking lot from Shipherd and Kercheval Streets.
Volunteers will be deployed to serve on teams and help residents cut down and remove brush and debris from the four properties. Others will serve on drill teams and install the painted plywood boards on the vacant homes.
There is no cost to attend or participate in the event, and corporate groups are welcome to pitch in. Participants must be 18 years old or accompanied by an adult.
