On Saturday, December 10, businesses in the Corktown neighborhood in Detroit are throwing an event to bring in and welcome shoppers, diners and visitors from around the region.
This will be the first year of “Corktown-a-Glow,” complete with a Corktown tree lighting ceremony at Bagley and Trumbull.
Quite a few businesses are participating in the event that will run from noon to 6 p.m. There will be a complimentary shuttle supplied by the Nemo’s stopping at various businesses.
They are the Detroit Artifactry, Detroit Athletic Company, Ditto Ditto Books, Eldorado General Store, The Farmer’s Hand (who we recently covered here), Hello Records, Mama Coo’s Boutique, Metropolis Cycles, Nemo’s and the collection of folks at the Ponyride Holiday Makers Market.
Many places will have holiday special deals.
Starting at 5 p.m. is the tree lighting ceremony and event, where you can visit with Santa Claus, grab some sheet music and go caroling, roast marshmallows while sipping hot chocolate (thanks to Mudgie’s), hot coffee and shortbreads by the delicious darling of the Detroit cuisine scene Sister Pie thanks to The Farmer’s Hand.
The tree is scheduled to be lit at 6 p.m.
There’s also a giving back portion of the event to benefit children and the homeless. People are encouraged to donate new, unwrapped toys for children and socks for the homeless, and they’re working with the Detroit Police Department to distribute them to those in need.
