The largest Taekwondo tournament in the world, according to organizers, will be returning to Detroit in June of 2017.
The USA Taekwondo National Championships will be held at Cobo Center. The tournament will start on June 29 and go through July 6, 2017. It is estimated that more than 5,000 competitors will be making their way to Detroit to compete in the tournament.
“Detroit is a great city and a fantastic location for Nationals, with convenient and affordable access from just about anywhere in the country,” said Jeanna Salgado, USA Taekwondo events director.
This is not the first time that Detroit has been the host city for the USA Taekwondo Tournament. It was held here in 2008 at Ford Field.
Detroit Sports Commission worked to bring the tournament back to Detroit, and their hard work paid off.
“We’re excited for the opportunity to partner with USA Taekwondo to bring its Nationals back to Detroit,” Dave Beachnau, Detroit Sports Commission executive director said. “We look forward to hosting this prestigious event and delivering a first-class experience to its competitors and attendees.”
Considering it has been nine years since the last Taekwondo tournament was in Detroit, participants and their families will be able to see a lot of changes that have happened in downtown Detroit.
