The Detroit Police Department received five new bullet resistant vests for the K-9 unit this afternoon. The vests were donated by Strategic Staffing Solutions, a Detroit-based IT, healthcare and finance staffing company.
Police departments often have tight budgets and the Detroit Police Department is no exception. This means that police departments are unable to purchase vests for their K-9 unit. This makes the police dogs vulnerable and unprotected while they perform dangerous tasks.
“Detroit is our corporate home and we’re honored to be able to support both animals and the community through this donation,” said Strategic Staffing Solutions Chairman Paul Huxley.
The first canine joined the Detroit Police Department in 1973.
Police dogs assist their handlers by detecting narcotics, bombs, and explosives. They are also used during search and rescue missions and in tracking dangerous criminals.
The vests are made up of seam-sealed, waterproof ripstop nylon. By using a technique that reinforces the material, it makes the vests resistant to tearing or ripping. These vests will protect the police dogs while on duty. The vests will also be able to stop the same rounds of ammunition as vests worn by their handlers and other officers.
“Our canines are beloved and valued within the Detroit Police Department” said Chief James E. Craig. “We are thrilled that Strategic Staffing Solutions is helping to protect our canines. We are truly humbled and grateful for their continued support and generosity.”
This is not the first time that Strategic Staffing Solutions have supported the Detroit Police Department. In June Strategic Staffing Solutions and the Detroit Police Department announced that they were renewing their commitment to assist with the care and feeding of the horses of the mounted unit.
