10Best, a project of USA Today, has highlighted one of the most talked about places in Detroit putting it in the running for “Best Art District” in the country.
People from around the world come to the Heidelberg Project on the east side to check out the art and creativity by Tyree Guyton, a long-time Detroit resident and artist who has made a visual impact around the world. This is what 10Best says:
Part political protest and part outdoor art environment, the Heidelberg Project in Detroit’s East Side aims to transform lives through the power of creativity. Begun in 1986, the project features a block of trees, yards and abandoned houses along Heidelberg Street adorned with found object sculptures and the project’s signature polka dot motif.
The competition is fierce and from a variety of areas. Other districts in the running include Bergamot Station Arts Center – Santa Monica, Brooklyn – New York, Chelsea – New York, Culver City Arts District, Dallas Arts District, Downtown Los Angeles, Houston Museum District & Project Row Houses, Lower East Side – New York, Museum Row on Miracle Mile – Los Angeles, NoHo Arts District – Los Angeles, Northeast Minneapolis Arts District, Parkway Museums District – Philadelphia, Santa Fe Railyard Arts District, SoWa – Boston, Station North – Baltimore, Union Square – San Francisco, Warehouse District – New Orleans, West Loop and River North – Chicago and the Wynwood Arts District – Miami.
Detroit recently was #9 on the list of “Best American Riverfronts.” With your vote, Detroit could have a shot at this one, too.
