If you have spent time in the Rivera Court of the Detroit Institute of Arts and wanted to learn more about the history behind the pair of people behind the mural, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, this is the show for you.
The DIA has been working on an exhibition of Rivera and Kahlo’s time in Detroit. It opens on March 15 and will run through July 12, 2015. The exhibition might be in a month and a half, but because this will be a very popular exhibition the DIA is suggesting people purchase their tickets in advance. This is an exhibition you do not want to miss.
The exhibition will feature 70 pieces of work from both Rivera and Kahlo. The exhibition will include Rivera’s drawings of Detroit Industry. These drawings are to scale of the mural, and have not been on display in 30 years. As for Kahlo’s artwork, this will be the first time many of the pieces will be shown in the city where they were created.
The art is not the only thing to see at the exhibition. There will be a closer look at the economic and social aspects of life during the Industrial Revolution, Depression, and Prohibition.
Rivera and Kahlo came to Detroit in April of 1932 and stayed until March of 1933. Rivera had been commissioned to paint a mural in the garden courtyard of the DIA, and today Detroit Industry is considered to be one of Rivera’s most accomplished murals.
While Rivera was busy working on the mural Kahlo was busy as well working on her own art. After having a miscarriage at Henry Ford Hospital, Kahlo’s art became more personal. Rivera loved being in Detroit. However Kahlo was not a fan and longed to be back in Mexico and her art reflected that.
This is a must-see exhibition for anyone interested in art in Detroit.

The DIA will also have extended hours on Thursdays during the exhibition, and will close at 10:00 pm. The museum will also be open until 7:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday starting May 26th.
