After months of anticipation the newest blow out salon Detroit Blows has opened for business.
I took a tour of the new space this week speaking to co-owners Nia Batts and Katy Cockrel about their new business.
My initial reaction to walking in to the salon was that it was a mix of chic and cozy.
According to Batts and Cockrel, their goal for the space was to make it feel like a living room.
The lobby has a small retail space that not only features hair care products from Paris based No. 4 and apothecary items. The salon has partnered with Conscious Commerce to bring a rotating line up of brands from around the country.
There is also a nice mix of Detroit owned businesses being showcased in the space like; the Tuberose signature scented candles from Detroit Rose Candles, Detroit Blows t-shirts from SMPLFD, and lip products from the Lip Bar.
A quarter of the net profit from retail products sold will go towards the philanthropic arm of Detroit Blows called Detroit Grows.
Now that we have talked about all of the great stuff happening in the lobby, let’s move on to the services this salon will provide.
Detroit Blows will offer both traditional blow outs, roller set blow outs, all with non-toxic products. By offering both services the salon will be able to accommodate women from all ethnicities.
The traditional blow out will take just under an hour, while a roller set blow out will take around 90 minutes depending the length and thickness of the hair.
A blow out at Detroit Blows will be $35 if your hair is above your shoulders or $40 if your hair is below your shoulders. $1 from every blow out service will go towards Detroit Grows.
Clients can add on scalp massages and deep conditioning treatments as well for $10 each.
By the end of October the salon will be offering walk in services for express manicures and pedicures, make up application, and eyebrow waxing. Currently those services are by appointment only.
One final thing about Detroit Blows, the hours are pretty great. They are open on Mondays which you rarely find in the salon world. They also stay open late during the week. Which let’s be honest businesses in downtown have historically closed at or near 6:00 p.m. when the majority of the workers head home.
Hours: Monday through Wednesday 8:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m., Thursday 8:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m., Friday 8:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m., Saturday 8:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.
You can make an appointment by calling 313-462-4108 or visiting the Detroit Blows website.
Detroit Blows is located at 1232 Library Street Detroit, Michigan 48226
