When medical marijuana became legal in the state of Michigan in 2008, it was received with mixed reviews.
One point of contention that remains is the question of what impact dispensaries – the distributors of medical marijuana – might have on the communities in which they exist.
The Grass Station opened its doors in June and will host a Labor Day block party at their location at 2930 East Grand Boulevard to show that dispensaries can be a positive asset to a community.
With the help of Playground Detroit, the party will open the dispensary doors to the community, showing off the newly renovated facility which includes expansive murals by local artists W.C. Bevan, Nosey42, and Birdcap.
Speaking with Cort Kweicinski, one of the founders of the business, he told us that “The purpose of the party this weekend is to give back to the community surrounding our location.”
The event will feature an art opening for local artists W.C. Bevan, Brian H. Newman, and Paul Johnson and live music from Golf Clap, Muzzy Bear, Quarter Royce, and Lomen. Food will be brought to you by the Taste Budz food truck, and beer and other drinks will be available for purchase as well.
In addition to connecting with the community, the company will also use the party to collect donated school supplies for DPS students to use during the upcoming school year.
They have already purchased 100 backpacks which they hope to fill with supplies. Attendees who bring donations will receive free access to the after party at the Jam Handy.
The event kicks off with the artist reception from 5-7 p.m., followed by an after party at the Jam Handy which runs from 7-11 p.m.
Entry to the artist reception is free, and after-party admission is a suggested $10 donation or free with your donation.
