If you have spent any time in Greektown in the past seven months you might have noticed that Plaka, a downtown Detroit mainstay since 1984, has closed and that there is something else going in the space.
I have been keeping an eye on the renovations since Plaka closed in November. Here’s what I know after talking to owner Christine Hapipis.
The new restaurant will be called The Greek and is owned by the same family that owned Plaka. They’re hoping to be open in a week pending inspections, which are already scheduled but anyone who has been around the Detroit restaurant/bar scene knows they can be a wildcard.
The interior has been completely changed for the concept, which will include Euro-centric events, music, and food. There also will be brunch. Gone are the murals and in are wood paneling, marble, and a tin ceiling. Work is still underway on the space.
The menu is still developing but I was told their gyro is staying, but now it’ll be offered with not just lamb or chicken but, according to the owners, traditional and authentic pork.
The Greek is hiring. They will be having an open house on Wednesday, June 28 from 12:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.
Those interested in being hired should bring their resume to the open house. They will have applications to fill out at the open house. Restaurant experience is preferred.
