Want to pedal to a pub, see some of downtown Detroit and not have to do it alone? Then HandleBar is your answer.
You can take 15 of your friends and hop on Detroit’s first and only 16-person pedal powered pub on wheels. There’s a driver in the front. You sit on “bar stools” on the side and, yes, you have to pedal.
You’ll need to bring your own food and drink. There’s a stereo on board with a headphone jack so you can hook up your iPod or iPhone and be the DJ for your favorite tunes. There’s also an FM/AM radio on board if you want the HandleBar team to choose the music. The ride stops at one to three bars, depending on the group.
The cost for a two-hour tour for 16 is $400 Friday/Saturday and $300 Sunday-Thursday. If you break it out, it’s $18-25 a person. Tours run from 12:30-10:00 p.m. on weekdays and from 10:0 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. on weekends.
You can find the HandleBar across from Z Garage right next to Punch Bowl Social. It’s just a block away from Greektown.
HandleBar has two bikes, so if you have a big group you’re all set.
“Weekend dates starting to fill up and business is good, ” says Brian Lindsay, co-owner of the HandleBar. “Weekdays are good and with the Tigers starting up its beginning to get busy during the week.”
HandleBar does birthdays, bachelorette/bachelor parties and corporate outings or simply any excuse to have fun with friends and colleagues. “It’s great for company team building,” Lindsay says.
He and his brother, Stephen, who is the other owner, have been building their brotherly team for years. “We are best friends and co-workers,” he says.
Stephen is full time at the HandleBar and Brian works for Toyota. They grew up in Ludington on Michigan’s west coast where their parents own a furniture store. They’ve always had strong connection to Detroit. Their parents grew up here and their dad was a Detroit police officer as was their maternal grandfather.
“It’s been cool to be downtown now and share the new scenery with them when they visit,” says Lindsay. “My mom was blown away this past weekend with all the changes.”
