Cornerstone Schools is looking to expand their reach.

At a press event Thursday they announced numerous items that they plan on fulfilling this year, their 25th anniversary.

The group of schools has been part of a study for the past two years that looked at how they could extend a new platform to broaden and strengthen it’s vision and mission. The goal is to help as many students as possible in the city of Detroit. The new program is called the Cornerstone Education Group (CEG). The group plans to expand to educate 5,000 students through the city of Detroit, up from 2,800 currently.

“We’re putting a stake in the ground,” said Reid Gough, CEO of the group. “We’re going to grow and educate 5,000 children in Detroit and hold ourselves accountable for excellent outcomes in all of our schools.”

In addition to expanding the student body they also announced that they will be looking to partner with any public or charter school in Detroit in order to learn from each other about what is necessary to help children in Detroit get an excellent education.

“There is not enough quality education in the city of Detroit, whether from traditional schools or charter schools. As the mayor said, excellent schools are critical in attracting and retaining a population that want to start and raise a family in Detroit. We want to be part of that solution,” said Gough.

Outside of that, at the announcement, they were light on details on how that’s going to happen.

Rounding out the event was the announcement that professional golfer Jack Nicklaus will be the headliner for the 13th Turning Point Invitational this August. Nicklaus is said by some to be “the greatest golfer of this century” and has won 18 professional major-championship titles.

The Invitational will be a two day event and will be held on August 14 and 15 at the Country Club of Detroit in Grosse Pointe Farms. Along with Nicklaus there will be other championship golfers at the event like; Mark O’Meara, Tom Lehman, Jerry Pate, Matt Kuchar, Fred Ridley, John Harris, Nathaniel Crosby, and Gary Koch.

The Turning Point Invitational was created to help raise significant funds for Cornerstone. This year is no different. Cornerstone has announced a $50 million Campaign of Excellence to help support Cornerstones mission. So far they already have $20 million in commitments lined up.
