There is something about seeing kites flying in the sky that brings back memories of my childhood.
I remember going to the park as a family to fly our kites on particularly windy days. My little brother and I would spend the time trying to see who could keep their kite in the air the longest.
It has been a long time since I’ve flown a kite. However I know it is only a matter of time before I start showing my son the joys of seeing a colorful kite dance in the wind.
The Detroit Kite Festival is quickly approaching. The festival will be held on the Belle Isle Cricket Field on Sunday, July 16.
Earlier this year the organizers of the Detroit Kite Festival held a crowdfunding campaign. They raised the full amount and then it was matched by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC).
The festival will have kites available to fly, however if you have your own kite you should bring it as well. There is no such thing as too many kites.
If you feel like trying your hand at kite making station there will be a Kite Making Tent hosted by the Detroit Institute of Arts.
Throughout the day there will be music and performances by John Harmon Accordion, King Thomas Moore, Motor City Street Dance Academy, and The Wind Jammers Kite Team.
There will also be an awards ceremony for the Tech Shop Competition Awards.
If you get hungry there will be numerous food and drink options available; Sistas on a Roll, Detroit Pop Shop, Georgia Brown’s Gourmet Foods, Tonic & Juice, Charles Barbecue Garden and Drifter Coffee.
The organizers also recommend bringing a picnic along. The festival will run from 10:00 a.m. until 4 p.m. on July 16.
The festival is free and everyone is invited to attend. The Cricket Field is located next to the Belle Isle Casino.
