About two days ago Michigan witnessed an earthquake at a magnitude of 4.2 in the lower portions of the state. Fortunately, no injuries were reported and for most individuals you may have not even noticed there was an earthquake. Earthquakes begin to cause severe damage and are much more noticeable at a magnitude of 5 and larger.

Nepal just a week ago on April 25 suffered from a much more devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8. Many individuals and organizations are doing wonders to help the people of Nepal during this time of great suffering, even right here in Detroit. We’d like to introduce you to a group of individuals that are students and coworkers from Nepal working to raise money and awareness on how we can make a difference.

The Office of International Students and Scholars and the Dean of Students Office will be sponsoring a vigil Tuesday, May 5 at 5:00 pm at Gullen Mall to show their support. For more information on that event, go here.

A more nationwide organization, and who I ran into on the RiverWalk, is the America Nepal Society, is also accepting donations at www.americanepalsociety.org. The America Nepal Society is one of the oldest organizations in the USA established in 1967. This is a non profit organization working exclusively for charitable, literary and educational activities. The activities ANS has done over the years are for fostering greater knowledge and understanding of literature, arts, cultures, values, manners, social customs, and other facts of diversities and similarities among Americans and Nepalese in the USA. All funds will go to the victims and families of Nepal suffering without water, food, clothes, and shelter.
