New restaurants are becoming a common occurrence in the greater Downtown Detroit area as of late. One of the more anticipated additions to the scene is La Rondinella, a concept by Dave Mancini, the genius behind the award-winning Supino Pizza (that happens to be next door).

If you don’t know Supino already, here’s a little about them on Food Network.

The announcement about La Rondinella came via the Supino Facebook page, and will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. This makes for another Italian eatery in the market, just a few blocks from the iconic Roma Cafe.

The menu, judging by what was posted in the window, seems affordable with the most expensive dish being a main course at $17 and includes vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options. Anyone who has eaten at Italian restaurants knows that prices can go much, much higher. Most of the plates are below $10.

The corner spot has sat basically empty since 2012 when it was occupied by Taste of Ethiopia that is now located in Southfield.

It has been a long road for the project, as with various permitting and paperwork issues with the city of Detroit that had to be dealt with.

With the addition of La Rondinella, it is going to make for a heck of a food destination block between these two restaurants, the old favorite Russell Street Deli, Zeff’s Coney Island and Mootown Ice Cream (which is a must-have on a hot day in the D), not to mention all of the other places in the Eastern Market neighborhood.

As La Rondinella isn’t open yet, we’ve mapped it below to Supino – since it’s right next door, you’ll get there.
