One of our favorite nonprofits, Gleaner’s Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan, just got a major boost in their efforts thanks to a $20,000 donation from the Mazda foundation, which strives to brighten communities through charitable gifts.
Specially, this donation will help Gleaners as they continue to expand their school-based Mobile Pantry program, which was launched in 2011. Initially limited to five sites, Gleaners’ School-Based Mobile Pantry program has expanded to 60 sites in high-need communities around Detroit.
The remarkable program distributes 25-30 pounds of food each month to provide families with full, nutritious meals, and has helped increase Gleaners’ outreach to young children, specifically those heavily reliant on school food programs for the majority of their meals.
The gift represents the continuation of a relationship between Gleaner’s and Mazda, which, since it’s inception in 2010, has given a total of $70,000 in contributions to Gleaners, and help’s continue the organizations important role in fighting food insecurity in Detroit.
