A year from now, Selden street in Detroit between Second and Fourth will have a completely different feel than it does now.
That’s thanks to news out of Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood today, announced by Midtown Inc., the nonprofit group that is the engine of development in the area.
Midtown Inc. announced a series of developments that total about $20 million to be spent along Selden, between Second and Fourth streets. That’s right near Selden Standard and Honest?Johns, and is in the general area of the Cass Corridor.
It’s also right next to a recently announced $77 million housing development that’s going on the site of the old Wigle Recreation Center.
The six highlights of the news today include:
1. A mixed-income, mixed-use residential development with “Ecohomes.” They will include features like rooftop solar panels, solar thermal hot water heating system, energy efficient thermal envelope, sustainable landscaping, rain barrels.
2. The arrival of Detroit’s first “Barcade.” That’s a national chain based in Brooklyn that has booze and vintage arcade games. that’s quite popular around the country. That’s going to be at 666 Selden.
3. A brewery school that’s supported by Eastern Michigan University, where you’ll be able to get a bachelor’s degree in fermentation science. Eastern is only the second university in the country to offer this program.
4. There’s a new restaurant called “North Cookshop.” That’s being developed by 3mission design and development, owners Jolly Pumpkin Brewery.
5. A new accelerator space for start-up and early stage creative companies that’s going to be targeting their services for women and minorities.
6. And, last but not least, an outdoor park with Wi-Fi for entrepreneurs called “Selden Corridor Courtyard.”
All projects are expected to be completed in about a year, by the end of fall 2018.
