Dear Ilitches: Nobody Moves To Detroit For The Surface Parking Lots

When it comes to planning our city, we had hoped developers might have learned a lesson after the demolition spree of the last few decades, where building after building was torn down for surface parking lots. After all, Dan Gilbert (and a host of other developers, large and small) have clearly shown that people want to be part of re-using historic structures, whether for locating their office there or making the place their new home. It seems that message hasn’t made it to the offices of th...

What is the state of Metro Detroit’s transit system? Where do we go from here? Will there be a ballot proposal in 2018? What about universal fare cards? What improvements have been made? That was all covered at the Transit Riders United Annual Meeting which had a program about the State of Transit. The local internet is abuzz with the nod to Detroit that Nick Jonas gave to Detroit at the Grammys with a shirt that had, in stencil lettering, “Detroit” on it. The shirt is one that he has a stake in promoting as one of many who are creating brands in light of the rise of the Detroit name. After all, a marketing study showed that “Made in Detroit” has a much higher resonance with customers than even “Made in America.” Last week was the announcement that designer John Varvatos (from Metro...

Detroit Tigers Decide To Go With One 'D'

Although the old english ‘D’ of the Detroit Tigers is considered iconic, in fact, the uniforms have changed more than 50 times since 1901. Today brings another change. The pointier ‘D’ on the baseball cap is going to be replicated on the home jersey. Teachers and staff in Detroit’s main school district could soon have to tell their supervisors if they are supplementing their salaries with a side job. If Oakland And Macomb Counties Don't Want The Benefits Of Mass Transit, Forget'em

The ongoing saga of regional transit negotiations is like watching a friend tragically go after dating someone they really, really like – but the person that’s the target of their affection just isn’t interested. The reality is a four county transit solution isn’t politically workable here. We should accept that and like Indianapolis, an Amazon top 20 city, move on. One of the things that was surprising on our most recent Daily Detroit Happy Hour podcast was that Indianapolis was a top 20 ci...
