City Club Apartments LLC is the developer and owner of the new apartment building. The new development will be built on the former site of the historic Statler Hotel that was demolished in 20...

New Ferndale Radio Station Hits The Airwaves From Inside The Rust Belt Market

If you’ve been surfing the airwaves (remember those?) around downtown Ferndale lately, you may have noticed a new non-commercial college-style radio station operating at the FM frequency 100.7. It’s Ferndale Radio, WFCB, short for Ferndale Community Broadcasting, with a signal that goes about 3 or 4 miles. It’s the same folks who launched a crowdfunding effort back in 2016 to launch a low-power FM station under a rare, special construction permit they’d obtained from the Federal Communications...

Mirror, Mirror On The Wall: It Turns Out A Detroiter Has The Best Beard Of Them All

In a national contest of beards, metro Detroit’s Jason Heien beat out the competition by a whisker to receive a national honor and become Wahl’s Man of the Year. If you remember, Wahl’s mobile barbershop made the rounds through the Motor City, and Heien was our area champion in the facial hair face-off. The contest is decided in part by public vote (40%) and also by a panel of judges (60%) who evaluate across a variety of beard factors, including intangibles like enthusiasm for the beard....

Little Caesars Arena Picks Uber To Be Official Rideshare Partner, Have Dedicated Pick-Up Zone

When it comes to ridesharing, competition is hot locally between Uber and Lyft, two national companies where you can use their app to summon a ride home. They’ve changed the game when it comes to going out in Detroit, as the local taxi companies are on balance (from years of personal experience) terribly unreliable, often aren’t around when you need them, and often turn off their fare meter. One of the top destinations for going out is Little Caesars Arena, home to the Detroit Red Wings, Pis...

Thanks to a construction project, the bulk of the action for the Fire and Ice Festival the weekend of January 19-21 will move to an open field at Second and Mill streets in downtown Rochester. New year, but same old same old when it comes to Detroit city government. A 35-year-old Detroit city councilman, Gabe Leland, is targeted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation according to the Detroit Free Press. Fox 2 News bird-dogged the story earlier this summer. Here are the high level bullet points: 1. Gasper Fiore pleaded guilty to bribery last month of a Macomb County official as part of a wide-ranging corruption investigation that’s now touching both Macomb County and the city of...

This year the museum located in the Milwaukee Junction neighborhood of Detroit will be open for...

Mr. America Comes To Metro Detroit, Zoo Gets A Second Bald Eagle

He may only have one wing, but he’s 100% awesome. A male bald eagle named Mr. America is now in his permanent habitat at the Detroit Zoo after recovering from an injury that prevented him from being released back into the wild. One of the bird’s wings was severely damaged, presumably after he flew into a power line, and had to be amputated. Named Mr. America by the Vincennes, Ind., licensed rehabber who cared for him, the eagle arrived at the Detroit Zoo in mid-November and spent several w...

Avenue of Fashion Mainstay 1917 American Bistro Has Closed

The Avenue of Fashion has one less place to grab a bite to eat. First-reported by Eater Detroit, the 1917 American Bistro has abruptly closed and has all of restaurant equipment up for auction. There has been no explanation as to why owner Don Studvent has closed the restaurant. There is also nothing noting the closure on the 1917 American Bistro Facebook Page. I’ve reached out for comment. Last year the restaurant was closed for a short time for renovations. Studvent opened the restaura...
