There Aren't Two Detroits. But There Are Two Metro Detroits.

Over the past few years we’ve noticed that there is a severe cultural disconnect in metro Detroit. Before you say “oh, another city vs. suburbs rant!” let’s be clear: It’s way more complicated than just city vs. suburb. Or black vs. white. This cultural divide doesn’t respect city boundaries. Sure, there’s a geographic element to it, but it’s also tied to family and life experiences. We live in silos. We have a lack of shared experiences and empathy. You could live in, say, Harrison Townsh...

Word came over the press wires that Olympia Development has begun construction of a new $30 million building on Temple Street in the District Detroit (or as we’ve always called it around the office, Ilitch Village). The development will be mixed use, meaning there will a combination of retail, parking,...

Augmented Reality (or AR) is becoming more and more of a thing. This project called ElectriFly Detroit plans to fuse street art and technology for a 35 foot by 20 foot interactive mural on the back of the old Steve’s Bar next to St. Andrew’s Hall. They claim that thi...

There is something special about going to a legit butcher shop. Sure, you can pick up some ground chuck at the grocery store, but sometimes you need to find a specific cut of meat that you can’t find at Kroger. This is where Matt and Mike Romine come in. They opened the artisan butcher shop Farm Field Table last December. The Ferndale based butcher shop specializes in meat from heritage whole animals from local Michigan farms. Farm Field Table supplies meat to customers at their butcher...

All southbound traffic will be directed to nearby Second Avenue...

When it comes to Michigan breweries, one beer reigns supreme, at least according to search data. The Business Broker Network took a look at all 50 states for the most-searched brewery in each state. All but one state — Missouri — had craft breweries at the top, and even then, Busch is based in St. Louis. In Michigan, the top-searched beer is Founders. They’ve made a lot of news with their popular pours and their new Midtown Detroit taproom. When it comes to style of beer, the top searche...

It's Great To See Detroit's J Dilla Get Some Of The Recognition He Deserves

J Dilla was a musical genius. The Detroit artist who died way too young at 32 years old in 2006 made the beats behind a variety of big hits and helped define the sound of a whole genre. If you don’t know who James Dewitt Yancey was, it’s time for a little primer. After all, two of his beat machines – his Minimoog and his MPC 3000 – are in the Smithsonian’s African American History Museum in Washington, D.C. Here are a few tracks you might know he was a part of, if you didn’t already....
