What to know and where to go in Metro Detroit

Ferndale's Locally-Focused Farm Field Table Butcher Shop To Expand In The New Year

There is something special about going to a legit butcher shop. Sure, you can pick up some ground chuck at the grocery store, but sometimes you need to find a specific cut of meat that you can’t find at Kroger. This is where Matt and Mike Romine come in. They opened the artisan butcher shop Farm Field Table last December. The Ferndale based butcher shop specializes in meat from heritage whole animals from local Michigan farms. Farm Field Table supplies meat to customers at their butcher...

Third Street Over I-94 In Midtown To Be Closed Indefinitely Due To Crumbling Bridge

Third Street, a one-way, multi-lane road through the heart of Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood, is going to be shut down over I-94. There’s not a definite timeline from the Michigan Department of Transportation on when the bridge will be repaired. According to MDOT, during a recent inspection of the overpass, they found structural deterioration in the bridge supports, requiring all traffic to be prohibited from using the overpass. All southbound traffic will be directed to nearby Second Avenue...

The Top-Searched Brewery In Michigan? It's Founders

When it comes to Michigan breweries, one beer reigns supreme, at least according to search data. The Business Broker Network took a look at all 50 states for the most-searched brewery in each state. All but one state — Missouri — had craft breweries at the top, and even then, Busch is based in St. Louis. In Michigan, the top-searched beer is Founders. They’ve made a lot of news with their popular pours and their new Midtown Detroit taproom. When it comes to style of beer, the top searche...

It's Great To See Detroit's J Dilla Get Some Of The Recognition He Deserves

J Dilla was a musical genius. The Detroit artist who died way too young at 32 years old in 2006 made the beats behind a variety of big hits and helped define the sound of a whole genre. If you don’t know who James Dewitt Yancey was, it’s time for a little primer. After all, two of his beat machines – his Minimoog and his MPC 3000 – are in the Smithsonian’s African American History Museum in Washington, D.C. Here are a few tracks you might know he was a part of, if you didn’t already....

Hispanics Outpace National Average For Home Ownership In Metro Detroit, African Americans Lag Behind

When it comes to minorities and home ownership, new data out shows that there are significant disparities between different racial groups around what is usually the largest asset a person or family has — owning a home. The data, culled from U.S. Census data and other sources and compiled by the real estate site Abodo, paint a very interesting picture. It’s one of the most clear numbers that illustrates wealth inequality. Nationally, 63% of Americans own homes. Whites in America have the hi...

WATCH: The Motor City Is Getting Rid Of A Freeway

In the heart of the Motor City lies a freeway whose days are numbered. I-375 is a mile-long, sunken freeway serving downtown Detroit. Its construction half a century ago destroyed an historic African-American neighborhood. Today, the freeway and its bridges are literally crumbling. It forms a barrier between Greektown and the Lafayette Park neighborhood. The Michigan Department of Transportation says the freeway no longer fits with a Detroit that is seeing major redevelopment. So rathe...

Peek Inside Detroit Axe & The Corner, Ferndale's Newest Destinations

When Local Kitchen in Ferndale closed in the beginning of October, the owners Geoff Kretchmer and Brian Siegel hinted that there was going to be big changes to the space. And boy, were there. One of the things that’s talked about a ton is the perception of the state, city and region. After all, there’s so much focus by the mainstream media on the splashes high-profile people and companies like Dan Gilbert make (because by putting the name in there, like we just did, more people...

Historic Buhl Building Bought By Gilbert's Bedrock

Apparently, Dan Gilbert’s skyscraper buying spree isn’t over just quite yet. The historic Buhl Building, a 390,000 square foot structure in the heart of the Central Business District that opened in 1925, has a very ornate lobby as well as some of amazing statuary high about the city. Per Historic Detroit, it’s another one of Detroit’s buildings adorned by the work of Corrado Parducci. The deal also includes a 652 space parking garage next door. From an entertainment perspective, the buil...
